The throttle body is off a BMW 528 from the mid-'80s. The adapter was something I made out of an electrical project box. Overall height is actually less than with a Holley carb and dropped base air clearer, so this setup should clear most hoods.

I was also thinking about a way of mounting a horizontal throttle body but never came up with something as cheap and effective as an electrical box.

Just a word of warning if you're thinking of using boost - I've done the math and it looks like the four screws holding the top on may be marginal for 15 psi of boost. I'm planning to add a strap (sort of like a battery hold down) that goes across the lid and is anchored with tie bolts to the two "ears" alongside the throttle body. Might be disasterous to have the cap blow off while driving.

Seems like mounting it vertically would be an easier, stronger way to do this. A piece of aluminum for an adapter (maybe 1/2") could be bolted to the manifold and the TB bolted to that. Much stronger and you could then make the 90 degree turn with an inlet pipe.

I thought about mounting it vertically, but realized I'd have hood clearance problems if I tried. The combination of the gasket, adapter, throttle body, and a 3" pipe elbow could easily stand 10"-12" above the manifold.

I'm really interested in seeing how it all goes together and runs. It seems like boost is the way to go for a super power slant. It's a shame there arn't going to be a lot of cheap BMW throttle bodies available to reproduce your setup.

What made you pick that specific throttle body. Was it 'free' parts bin type stuff?

Actually, I chose the BMW throttle body because they are pretty cheap and easy to find around here, and at 3" in diameter have a lot of flow. I paid less than $20 for the throttle body and the upper intake manifold. Originally, I planned to make a set of runners to connect the BMW manifold to the slant six head, and I may still try that sometime.
