I would like to give a huge thanks to everyone here especially Doug,Dusteridiot, and Charlie S for all of the help and advice on the 170 H-P that I built for my 60 Valiant.I started it for the first time yesterday and was extremeley pleased as it started right up and the cam seemed to break in well with out any drama involved(other than my self having a silly assed grin on my face,my buddy said my head was too big to get out of the garage). The only leak was a small coolant leak from one of the bypass caps on the water pump (havnt installed the heater yet).Every thing was hooked up including full exaust system. After two 20 minute breakin sessions( running engine at 1300 to 2000 rpm) with 20 minute cooldown between I proceded to set the timing and carb(The Holley 390 seems to be close on target for the 170) and now it starts up with just the bump of the key and idles smoothly with a nice exaust note. The oil pressure is 54 cold and 46 hot and temp never got over 180. The vacumm was low at 14 inchs but I attribute that to having to adjust the valves and the rings not being seated yet.Overall I am extremeley pleased with my first engine build.
The specs on this engine is ; 1960 170 bored .030 over ,9.2 to one comp ratio,stock valves,Dutra Dual front modified stock rear manifold,Clifford H-P manifold,Comp Cams 264s cam,MSD ignition with 1980 elec.dist.,dual 2inch pipes running into a 2 1/4 pipe then into a glass pack the 2inch tailpipe ,all this running trough a 4spd o/d trans into a 3.55 rear.
I realize that this is just the beginning as the tuning now starts but I dont beleive that I could have made it this far without the help of this exellent forum.THANKS TO ALL!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8)

I would concur with that also, but... a question; what is your initial timing set at? (for the distributor)
When I first ran the Hpak on mine I got lower readings closer to TDC initial, when I run 10-16 BTDC initial my vacuum at 1000 rpm is about 22-24" and is 15-19 at street speed on level ground (call it 45 in 3rd gear, or 65 in OD).

You're gonna have a whole lotta FUN!!!!! Just keep you foot out of it near the police!!!

Thanks D.I.
My initial timing is 11btdc but it seemed to idle a tad better at 15 btdc but was getting about 34 degrees total advance(mechanical),I havnt even thought of the vacumm advance yet and the cam was degreed in to Comps specs.I havnt driven the car yet as it doesnt have a front clip on it or glass or interior but a few impromtu pass's down the road are in order(my shop is way out in the country)but really wont be able to tell much untill I start driving it on a regular basis.
I really do need to put up a page for this car and my other slants(71 DodgeD100,63Dart170,and 79Aspen)so yall can see where your helpful info ends up.
I still cant beleive how easily this engine started and how smooth it idles. Thanks again.

Yeah, I have two "experimental" shorty slot governors to try out. My timing light died so I can't try out my 'combination' which should run 16 initial with 30 total mech and 52 with the vac. advance can. I noticed that my Hpak idles better and I can turn the idle mix screws in a smidge at 14-16 BTDC also...

If this distributor ends up being ok, I'll have another 'governor' to sell and I'll give you first dibs on it so you can get that 14-16 BTDC but not go over 30 mech+init.

As far as my idle screws, they are each 1 full turn off the seat and it seems a little rich but idles well and smooth.I do have the plenum divided on the H-P.Also the idle is at 900 rpm.Like I said, and as you know, this thing really needs some real world testing but Ill play with it as much as I can.I will try the timing a little higher and see what that does.

Awesome news, Hyper. Have fun driving and tuning! We'll see you at the track next year, eh?

Also, the 170 may want more total advance than a 225. 30 is about max for a 225, but it has such a long stroke. You are probably close to there with 34 total as you posted.

Lou

Stock slots vary per car...I used to have a hand full from various slant six , small block, and big block cars and they all are different (30-18 degree governors). Those that are over 22 degrees I have a buddy and we've worked out a 'jig' to weld the slots into 14 degree governors and then I take the time to 'fuzz' the slot out with my die grinder and burr so they have anything from a .313 (very short throw...lots of initial...usually I fuzz these out to make the later type since I have to clean up the weld job), to .381 for say a 10-12 BTDC initial and 18-20 advance...

Thanks for the replys, fellas.Pics are forthcoming--------sometime.
Sixinthehead, you are not really that far from me so when this ride is ready maybe we can meet in the middle and we can go for a ride.
Lou,barring any catastrophe ,I WILL be at Bristol next year but really hope to get to a curvy track also.
