Hi I was sent here because you are the gurus of the leaning tower. Heres my problem

I cannot get the carb to stop leaking. I finally narrowed it down to the accelerator pump shaft. I really can't believe a company designed a carb that has so many vertical seals!

Anyway, I just rebuilt this thing per the FSM. Anyone have ideas???

Ken

Umm, well, it should work now if you rebuilt it. It sounds like the accelorator pump diaphram was allowing gas to seap past it, exiting out the pump shaft.

I agree, Holleys are a PITA to get sealed, I just "bit the bullet" and bought another rebuild kit so I could get the float bowl to seal on my 1920. I have been living with "a drop of gas every few minutes" kind of leak for a few months. :x

It sounds like you need to do the same thing, buy another carb kit and be extra careful with replacing that main metering block gasket that also serves as the accelerator pump diaphram. Make sure the metering block is clean and flat. Inspect everything for nicks or scratches that could let fuel through.

Thanks for the info! I will pull it apart and check that metering plate. I fought and fixed a massive fuel bowl leak but I cheated by using a skim of Hylomar on the gasket

I admit I prefer Carters, but I'm sure this Holley will work fine

This Barracuda has to be running by tomorrow night its my work car

Napa sells a rubber (neoprine?) bowl gasket for the 1920's. You can reuse it as many times as you like. I've had one on mine for a few years now: found it on a junk yard carb and who knows how long it was on before I got it. It has never leaked a drop. Its still listed on Napa's online site to get the part number.

I opened it back up, checked the float for floatage (it passed) then retightened the economizer body screws. Fired it up and no leaks!! So now I have my work car back. WOOHOO!!!

I really got to give credit to my girllfriend here. I severely sprained my wrist yesterday and she did most of the wrenching today. What a wonderful friend I have in her

Eric, I'll be getting that Napa seal- Thanks!
