I am getting ready to rebuild my engine electrical harnesses and I am wondering if the bulkhead connectors have removeable pins and if so how are they removed? Also most of the wiring is brittle and I want to replace any questionable wires so are the pins on the various connectors on these harnesses commonly available through Chrysler or any other source? Mine are corroded and some are really greasy.

What year and model are we working with? (I will guess it's a 60-62 A-body)

Yes, the "pins" do come out of the bulkhead housing. The early "flat type" male pins are slotted up the backside and snaps-in, you squeeze the sides of the pin to release it, then pull it out from the wire side.

I'm sure they are, there are places that sell new harnesses so they are availible, but where may be an issue.

Start with your local napa auto parts, they have a wide variety of electrical stuffs.

Some styles require a special tool to release a tab on the side of the flat side of the contact. I made one from a tiny screwdriver like those used to tighten eye glasses.

The terminals are available, but were not available through any of my parts stores, so I had to order them on the net. I don't have the info handy, but I think they are referred to as 58 series contacts. They come in different sizes and plating. They all mate with each other, but are for different wire sizes.

They also require a crimper that I could not find at a reasonable price, so I modified the dies on a cheap terminal lug crimper. It requires two crimps, one for the conductor and one for the strain relief, but it does a good job.

It's kind of pricey but Year One has harnesses for your year. I just got done putting one of there harnesses in my 63 Dart , it was a perfect match. I can't remember the original source Year One gets them from however I checked before ordering and they really didn't mark them up substantially.

I had to replace everything from the firewall forward due to a hood torsion spring that spent 4o years rubbing against an insulated contact on my horn relay until one day....you guessed it....complete meltdown while the car was in storage no less.... :cry:

I bought a 70 Dart engine compartment harness awhile back from Y1. They get them from M & H Electrics out of CA. At least that's what the decal in the box said! As I understand it, they deal with Y1 exclusively. You might also try Evans Wiring RBevans7@aol.com They deal mostly with 66 - up A, B and E Bodies although they will do custom harnesses (like for my 65 Dart) upon request.

Well here's what I did. Went to my favorite junk yard and they had a harness in a 74 Valiant and it's exactly what I needed. There are a few issues with it like rotting tape and one broken connector, but it's much nicer and nothing has been tampered with. My old one had spliced and modified wires and a bunch of cracked and greasy wiring and connector ends. This one is un molested and not nearly as brittle as my old one. So I payed 40 bucks for it and pulled it myself in about 45 minutes. The only thing different about this car is that it had the smog pump but I think all else was the same. Electronic ignition same coil, AC. I think I scored. Thanks for all the help.

$180.00 for the new harness from Year One, 1963 Dart, power nothing.....front harness only, the worst part was waiting over two months to have it built.

I am not the patient type so I built my own in the meantime, it's still on the car....the Year One harness is still in the box. I'm pretty proud of my work, don't know that I'll ever change it back out..... :lol:

I too fabricated my own front harness and eliminated the bulkhead connector in the process..
