Got the '74 Scamp running. Fresh rebuild with slightly hotter Iskey cam, 40 over pistons .060 off the head and Holley 5200 on 2 barrel manifold with proline fuel adapter. 904 tranny freshly rebuilt as well. Took a little while to get the tranny fluid in but now it shifts fine. The car boggs off the start. I set the timing to 5 deg BTC with the vac advance plugged. Also set the idle pretty good by ear. Tried to adjust the air/fuel mixture screw but not sure how to adjust it. Seemed to have little effect when I screwed it all the way in nothing changed and I screwed it out about 3 full turns and no difference. Also it should be noted this carb is NOS from Motorcraft. Probably sat on a shelf for 20 years or more. It's originally for a Pinto or Bobcat so I'm guessing the jetting is set up stock and the floats are likely set to factory specs. One other note, I have a fuel regulator in line and a fuel pressure gauge at the inlet to the carb and I have the pressure set around 3 PSI which is recommended in some info I got from a Redline website.

Question, what should I do first to get it running properly? I have driven it around the block a few times and gotten it up to operating temp. Should I readjust the valves? I set them to .010 intake and .020 exhaust cold before starting. Also I don't have any of the egr vac system connected and no other vac lines connected and all carb vac ports are plugged except the vac advance for simplicity sake. One other thing is I have a small Weber VW style air cleaner. I do have the PCV and breather connected.

Any help in troubleshooting this bogging would be appreciated. Seems to idle fine although a little rough as would be expected with a hotter cam I think. Really seems like the carb isn't set up correctly.

Thanks

What size is your idle jets? they are on the outside of the carb, and look like a big screw. if you look close, it has a number on it.
this jet is what controls the idle mixture, and the idle-mix screw just adjust how much of this jet you allow to be in use.
I would try a 0.45 or so idle jet, to start with.
the idle mix screw should be about 2-3 turns out when the jet is correct.
If it runs ok when the screw is 1 turn out, the jet is too big, if more than 3 or so turns out, it is too small.
Remember that webers use the idle jet to a much higher rpm. than normal carbs. They are just a bit different...

I'll look when I get home, I'm on travel until tomorrow. This carb was NOS for a stock Pinto so whatever was stock for the Pinto or Bobcat is probably what is in there. Thanks for the reply.
