While rebuilding my trucks 360 I used the torque number from larry shepards book. 100 lbs. for main caps. My Chiltons and everywhere else Ive looked since says 85 lbs. Will it hurt anything to loosen and retorque after every things together? Do you think its a type-o or his preference?

If you already torqued it to 100, just leave it, everything will be fine. There is a safety margin beyond the factory torque spec. If the cap bolts didn't get "soft" (yield) when you torqued them to 100, they will be fine, in my opinion.
