Just took the cover off the oil pump to see if it turns when engine turns. NO IT DON'T. Question is this: Where is the failure most likely to occur? Is more likely the gear went south, or what ? The car, 74 Duster, still runs good and is my driver. I don't want to keep driving the 63 Dart daily. Would rather have my Duster back running. Also when removing pump, will I have to take off trans mount too to lift motor high enough? What to do and not to do?

If you destroyed an oil pump gear you most likely dinked up the gear on the cam too. It may be time to bite the bullet and pull the motor anyway.

slantzilla, I have gotten the old pump out and the gear is just spinning on the shaft. I have been driving this car for 5 yrs. every time I leave a light hard, the idiot light would come on. I thought the oil was running away from the pick-up tube. Maybe the gear was spinning on the shaft the whole time, unable to keep up with the RPM;s. I will post results when it is back together and I try it.

Wow, a gear spinning on the shaft is way better news then a "splattered" gear and cam.
I had a no oil pressure SL6 recently that had a hairline crack thru the oil pump drive gear and it came completly off the oil pump shaft. I pulled-out the pump and there was no gear on the end of the shaft.

Maybe it's time to install a case hardened gear.
