I had my head re-surfaced and a valve job done a few months ago...after my fiasco with my headers i havent had a chance to crank her over until today. Thats when i noticed a terrible squeel every time the #2 intake valve would go down. Is this a repercussion of a lack of oiling on the valve stem when I had the valve job done? Is there something i can do without tearing apart the whole valve train again? Thanks for any info on this... ~Weskimo

Are you sure you have the rocker shaft with the notch up? How long did you let it run? It will take a few seconds to get oil up there for the first time. Also make sure your valve lash is pretty loose. Maybe .022 exhaust and 15 or so on the intake.

I only had it run for about 2 minutes but i was afraid something might break. I have the exhaust set to .030 and the intake set to .015. I had to run to the part store to pick up a bypass hose and after i put it on i couldnt get the truck to start again. When i had it running the bypass hose wasnt on but there wasnt enough coolant in it to even circulate. My dad thinks i might have messed up the head gasket to a point that iv lost compression due to running it without coolant. But i figured that running it for two minutes wouldnt of got it hot enough to do such damage...correct?

Running w/o coolant won't get it hot enough for 2 minutes, not enough to kill a head gasket at least. But it may reap havoc on water pump bearings. Are you sure you aren't hearing the water pump squeal instead?

I'd pull all the plugs and do a compression test then go from there.

As to #2 valve... is there oil coming out all the rockers except for #2?

Im dead positive its the valve...my dad cranked it over while i watched the valve go down...and squeek. As for the oil thing...i dont know where the oil is supposed to come out of, but it doesnt look like theres any more oil than what i poured on.

You used the right screw in the last position (against firewall) right? I believe this is the longest one and has a hole in the center of it to allow oil to flow into the rocker shaft.

You see how theres a line down the middle of each rocker arm? Oil is supposed to come out of this slit to lube the valve tip. Its not a huge amount but if you run your finger over the rocker you should get a drop or two at least.

Did you have oil pressure, showing on the guage, or at least the light going off? If so, remove the rocker arm shaft assy, and the spark plugs, crank the engine over and see if oil comes out the rear most rocker stand(might take a minute of cranking). If no oil comes out, the rear cam bearing may be installed wrong, or in rare instance the oiling holes in the rear cam journal may be wrong or missing.

Sorry misread the original post. Thought you had rebuilt the complete motor, so disregard the cam hole deal, but I would still check for oil coming out of the stand. It is possible the cam bearing turned, or the passage in the head or head gasket is plugged up.

I had one do the same thing. I had to take the rockers apart and run fine wire through the oil holes. Lots of carb cleaner helps too. You'll be amazed at how much crap will come out of those little holes.:shock:

I remember something about a certain longer bolt but im not sure what i did with it...Ill pull the last one to make sure its the long one. Any ideas as to why i cant get her to fire up now? Im gonna try again to fire her up again today after i check that assy bolt.Thanks guys. ~Weskimo

So i checked the last bolt, it was the long one...but whats this? THERES NO HOLE TO PASS OIL!!! Is this possible? Have i been sabataged? How could the motor of ran as long as it did without the valve train being lubed? So instead of the oil being spread across the valve assy, its now being spread across my engine compartment...GRRR. I also have coolant leaking out of the mass of hoses located near the water pump, i cant see which one the coolant is leaking out of because its too smokey to see when i first shut off the motor, and when the smoke clears its not leaking anymore...So should i make a trip down to the part store to buy a new bolt, or should i throw it on my metal lathe and bore a hole or two in it? i am also having starting issues. At first when i crank it, it sounds like only on cyclinder is firing, then as i keep cranking a few more chime in, then i just let off the starter and floor it and it stutters to life. Not sure whats causing this since it never did that before.

There is no hole in the bolt. The oil comes up around it, not through it. :shock:

The later model ones have a stepped bolt to pass more oil. :shock:

So what should i do? The oil that should be lubing my valves is being thrown away from everything and on the ground, wheel well, etc.

Put the bolt back in.

There shouldn't be any place for the oil to spill out (besides the rocker arm oilers) It sounds like you are missing a washer or don't have the rocker assembly seated properly.

Take a closer look, there is a good chance that it's all right there in front of you.

Well i gave the valve assy the once over and didnt see anything out of place. The squeel did somewhat go away, it now only sqeels when you rev it, not when it idles. Im still having trouble getting it started though. Its firing but its just not kickin over hard enough to take off by itself. I cleaned up the plugs and it fired up so i think im gonna buy a new set. Also i think that since i dont have any spacers between my plug wires i might get a weak spark. I think the year old gas ay have something to do with it too...any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated though. Thanks ~Weskimo

Don't forget that one of those washer/spacer things under the rocker arm bolts is a bit longer than the others, longer meaning front to back, not up and down. It must go on the center bolt. First time I had my rocker shaft off 20 years ago I got it back on the wrong place, (could not understand why the service manual said center one was longer, they all looked the same). Anyway, this shifted a rocker arm over just enough so it did not oil. Might want to check that out.
