Well OK, Its been along time since I had a toy to play with, you all know the story, first I got married then the kids.... had to sell the toys, then no money or time. Its been a long time since I played so I have to start slow and cheap and I am going to have a lot of stupid questions. Question #2 of the day. Can you get that "Muscle Car Growl" from a slant six with the simple addition of headers, new pipes and mufflers. If so what headers, mufflers and size of exhaust do you rec.

There is no such a thing as "the" muscle car growl. Every different variety of every different kind of engine has its own unique sound signature, which is further modified by every change to the exhaust system.

Exactly what kind of sound are you trying for? A slant-6 will never sound like a V8.

i have a video of a mean slant that someone sent me a while back. i dont know who's car it is, but if your interested i could email it to you.

Dutra duals w/ 2.25" dual exhaust, H pipe to retain low end torque and reduce resonation in the cab, and your choice of good quality glaspack mufflers or a couple Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. The 40 series oughta give you the "growl" you're looking for. A single 50 series with 2.5" pipe on my truck (straight six equal to 243ci, so fairly close in size to a slant) with no catalytic converters sounds very nice. I assume you want it to sound low and mean, but not obnoxious and ricey?

goofing around one time I cut the exauhst off and left a 3 foot pipe from the manifold. Going from a full 1 7/8 with a muffler out back to a 3 foot pipe open was quite the shock. The sl6 sounded like a jet.Its cool at acceleration from a dead stop because the whole car shakes. It was fun for about a week then it got to me, I couldnt hear anything else and the neighborhood didnt like it. Then I put a hollow cat at the end of the 3ft pipe which made it go from insanley loud to insanley loud with a lower tone. After another few weeks of that I put the old system back on just with a dead muffler before the axle. Cutting off the pipe after the muffler made it seem quieter than what I started with, I like it now, I cant explain the sound, really low, kinda like a phantom sound. With the valves adjusted right all you hear is mellow low tone.

Want it to have a v8 growl, do some head work and add a 6 into 1 header, no pipes, just open exhaust. Theres your growl.

If you want v8 sound, get a v8...

As pyper6970 suggested the meanest sounding /6 starts with a header.

I once ran on my 65 GT convert a set of Clifford headers through a set of turbo mufflers out the back. From idle to maybe 1500 RPMs or so, it sounded like a 340; however when I got on it, had a much different sound but definitely not a V8 growl (you could tell it was a six).

I beg to differ there Dan. With 2-1/2" exhaust and a good turbo style muffler mine sounds like a 340 when I stand on it.

It actually runs like one too.

It sounds like a 440 when I hit the joos.

Mine has a nice growl with clifford shorties "Y"ed down to a single 2 1/2" pipe and a cherrybomb turbo muffler. It isn't overly loud but cruising 60-70mph there is no question this isn't your grandmothers slant six.

Just idling around town, my car does sound like a V-8. It's probably a combination of the cam, the headers, and the two flowmasters.

When I give it a lot of gas, it sounds very raspy and metallic. It is a mean sound. Not sure what it sounds like outside the car.

I just bought a Ichibahn´s muffler and mounted it as tail tip, I revomed silencer, so the only thing that makes noises is Ichibahn´s muffler.




you need to increase gamma correction to get a goood looking of it.
