I know that many of your guys must be trying to cool your lower balls assy after the nice work that shamc made you do... still I'll take my chances and ask some silly q's

A) why a dual ex assy with no connection between cyls 123 & 456 "looses" low end grunt?
B) how far away from the collectors I should install that balance pipe? has to have the same diam as the pipes (2" each)
C) ain't that gonna kill some perf on high reving?
D) Would a balance pipe make my ex sys louder or quieter? I hate the noise it makes on certain speed/rpm range.

Definitely quieter. My Duster sounded like crap warmed over 'till I had a crossover installed in the duals. Next time I'm gonna run one large single exhaust, though...

I'm sure you've heard the old bromide "There's no such a thing as a dumb question" (or "The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked").

That's wrong. There are many kinds of dumb questions; a major one is the kind that the asker could have answered all by himself by just giving it 30 seconds' more thought.

Juan, I have NEVER seen you ask a dumb question. Asking a question 'cause you don't know the answer or your information differs from what's being presented is not dumb or silly!

Your questions A, D and half of B are explicitly answered Here.

Other half of "B" is "No", you can make the balance pipe smaller than the main pipes if it will be easier for you (1-7/8" balance pipe on a 2" system, for instance).

Answer to "C" is "No".

Thanks guys for your answers. Dan, I know what you mean. I jsut couldn't believe the stupidity of the questions this guy asked... I would think that someone was trying to get the board nerves up...

so, the balance pipe should go on the hotter spot, ain't gonna kill performance and it's gonna de-broooooom my sys. Sweet! I have to take it out 'cuz I'm swapping intake manis, I'll have it worked then. The work was going to be made at my muffler/speed shop anyway (they have really nice thick gaskets and they know their way around that.

I have held my tongue out of respect for the community and its members. One thing I like about coming here is the comparative lack of flaming. On the VW site I go to, there is a "Rants and Raves" section the members call the "shark tank" and it gets pretty hot in there. I think the reason I don't mind it so much is because all the air-cooled VW owners I have met have all been very giving, honest, polite, basically the friendliest people youd want to meet, so seeing the opposite transposed with VWs is kind of an amusing escape. Conversely, most of the Mopar guys I have met have been, shall we say, very selective about who theyre friendly with. If there was that kind of environment here I would leave immediately. Too many bad memories.

Myself, I figure that if I can be friendly and helpful to people on here, I can kind of balance out all the b/s they have to put up with in the real world when dealing with people in the business. This site has certainly done that for me. I know that whenever I go looking for a heater core and some surly overpaid parts guy tells me Modine has gone belly-up so they can sell me their Stant one (which wasn't Stant, rather a goddamn Chinese POS that didnt fit) I can come on here and whine about it and get the straight dope from people who arent out to make a buck.

Sham probably isn't all that bad, maybe ADD/dyslexic and a little slow but Im sure he means well. That kind of behaviour I don't mind. It's the shark personality that makes my blood boil and I for one am glad that kind of behaviour isn't tolerated on here.

Back to the subject, sorta. Wat makes exhaust pop and crackle whenever you let off the gas real quick? Even my stock single exhaust does it.

Mixture goes too rich and timing goes retarded on closed-throttle deceleration, so lots of unburned fuel hits the hot exhaust system, where it ignites and explodes. A dashpot helps. So does setting up the vacuum advance so it goes to full advance on closed-throttle deceleration.

Got that question answered, heres another one. What causes my exhaust to poof and pop when it is idling? My engine is not missfiring any, runs as smooth as always. The poofs ans pops are irregular, if you know what I mean.

Plain old ordinary misfiring. Can be caused by faults in the ignition, carburetion and/or induction systems, or by faults in the hard parts (burnt valves, etc.)

how can I find "the" spot for hooking the balance pipe? I don't have any kinda heat sensitive paint for doing so... what I should use for that?

Well, pretty much any material that changes color with heat will work. One such material is aerosol spray copper gasket sealant (such as Copper-Cote). This stuff consists of copper powder in an adhesive binder. If you spray the exhaust pipes with it and then go for a drive, then stop and inspect, you will see a rainbow color effect, with dark "cast iron grey" at the hottest point. The rainbow will originate from the hottest point and spread out from there.

(Copper Cote is also a terrific car detailing material if you're headed to a show. Spray the entire iron exhaust manifold with it about 3 days in advance, and drive around. It'll look like brand new cast iron on show day.)
