I've recently installed a Pertronix electronic ignition. Very easy install, fires up great. But ... after the engine warms up I have a terrible pinging sound (same if a lower octane is used). I used a premium grade name brand gas and lead additive. I've also tried adjusting the timing many times. I purchased the car with a cracked manifold, replaced it (with the help of this sites great info)-only had to do it twice to get it perfect. I also noticed the carb is sucking air. I'll rebuild it, but is it possible the pinging sound has anything to do with the carb? Or just something more I have to do with the distributor? Or a combination? Thanks, Dale

Absolutely. A lean condition (air leak at carb) will cause detonation (pinging). Also check to make sure the exhaust heat riser (the counterweighted thing on the exhaust manifold) is not stuck on "full heat".

Thanks Dennis, I'll rebuild the carb this weekend and cross my fingers. I was fortunate enough to find a NOS exhaust manifold-mint condition, the heat riser works perfectly. It's also a 2bbl version which seems to have a better counter weight design (round). There is a method to madness, when funds permit I'd like to convert to the "super six" set up I've been researching on this site. Thanks for your response, Dale

Definitely get your carb issue straightened out.

I think you might have the dist-timing advanced a little bit to much, which will make it ping.Back it off a touch and see if that helps.
