...let's see if we can find some pictures. I think they had a trunk full of fifties-era tube electronics, didn't they?

Nah, it was a Bendix mechanical system, similar to the Rochester mechanical system on "fuelie" Corvettes.

From what I hear, the Rochester system actually worked better.
You sure about that? I'm pretty sure it was electronic, but I've only ever seen pictures.

D/W
I'm pretty sure it didn't have electronics- maybe some "electromechanical" stuff like solenoids and relays, but I don't think it had electronics. (talking about the 1957/1958 FI systems- the '81-83 was definitely electronic.)

So while we're on early applications of technology:

What was the first Chrysler product to offer electronic (analog, not digital) anti-lock brakes, and when?

440_Magnum, search "Bendix Electrojector". I haven't found anything real definitive, but all the info I've dug up so far indicates it was an electronic system. I read an article in a magazine with pics several years ago - I have it, but God knows where... Anyone else remember the article or what issue/mag it was in?

Well shut my mouth and call me dumb!

The links that pop are do indeed make it sound like there are at least something like vacuum tube amplifiers in the system, so one could guess that the fuel mapping might be done analog-computer style.

The funny thing is that in all my years of Moparing, I've never run across mention of tubes in the '58 FI system before today, and that strikes me as a little funny. OTOH, a '58 300D has never been more than a pipe dream for me, let alone an injected one, so I never really dug deep for information on it.

Seems to me I recently read an artical about a 58 DeSoto with the electronic system (tubes n all) that had been restored and actually ran. It was probably in Mopar Action. The Puter (tubes n all) was located in front of the rad. Tin foil and paper condensors, glass vacuum tubes...I bet that ran well on a gravel road in the rain....
I saw a 58 300D on a trailer headed east somewhere on Interstate 90 (South Dakota) this week. It looked original and unrestored. The very sight of it kept me amused for half an hour.

I saw the article Sandy did in MA. Definitely an analog electronic computer of sorts on that Bendix injection.

I'm sure I saw a 1989 5th ave. with a efi 318 in it.
Not from the factory. Are you sure you didn't see the horrendous underhood mess of hoses and wires that supported the feedback Holley 2bbl carb that was used on all Civilian 318 M-bodies from '85-'89?

What kind of EFI did this engine you saw appear to have?

Hey, Dan. I didn't say "i saw a 89 with FI". I said I had a 88 with lean burn, and I thought the 89's were the same.

Thanks Al! Those are wonderful pictures. That system looks very practical with the exception of the electronics. It seems to be very similar in operation to the Bosch Jetronic I had in my 73 Volvo 164E,,,,,points ignition with EFI.
