 Post subject: Throttle Cable

I am converting to a Super Six and I cannot figure out how to get the old thottle cable out. What's the trick?

The round metal ferrule that plugs into the firewall hole has a flat spring clip on the interior side of the firewall, holding the cable assembly to the firewall. Slide off the clip, and the cable will come out of the firewall.

Thanks Dan. I will try that when I get off work.

Also, I have the kickdown rod, but the bracket on the transmission doens't seem right. The hole is too small. Can I drill it out, or is there a different bracket for the Super Six?

I don't know what vehicle model or year you are working on but some have a plastic end that snaps into the firewall, then there is a little metal piece stuck through a hole in it on the INSIDE of the firewall. If it's this style you need to bend one end of that metal piece straight and pull it out from the other end. You do this from under the dash.

I believe the cable on the car is the type that Dan is describing. The "new" cable is the type with the plastic piece. Either way, I think they are both too long. Is it possible to get the correct cable new?

It was possible to get it new about 8 years ago, though I haven't got the P/N any more. If they've dried up, there's a very good cable reproducer in Australia (http://www.autocables.com.au), and they could probably reproduce the shorty 2bbl cable.

i just used my original throttle cable and it worked out fine. just so you know that is an option.

i didn't do anything but hook it up. worked fine. i guess there could be problems with doing this but in my experience it worked fine.

I don't like doing it this way 'cause the tight-radius bends required (to make the long cable work for the short distance) cause too much internal friction in the cable.

Actually during the Volaré/Aspen productions they introduced a longer throttle cable for the 2-bbl carb option that was looped around at the factory and tied with one of those plastic tie strap things. I have/had the service bulletin announcing it. The loop was added to reduce/eliminate some kind of vibration/noise from being transmitted to the passenger compartment.

Yes, I agree this would add a lot of extra friction to the cable.

Hey, one thing's I've noticed over the years is that GM products during the 1970's and 1980's have throttle cables that work a lot easier and smoother than Chrysler products from the same era. Anyone know why? Different lining? Improved friction characteristics?

Okay, I got the old one to fit. However, I don't like how tight the bends are. It's not long enought to loop, so it's just kind of jammed in there.

Craig, thanks for the info on the Aspen/ Volare cables. My other cable must have come from one of those cars. It's long enough to loop and even has a tag on it that says something about a loop. I couldn't make out what the entire message on the tag is, but the word "loop"was legible. I guess I will use this cable and loop it like it is supposed to be used.

You need to find a V8 cable which is shorter.I found mind at a local pick and pull.The loop de loop and long bend method is not desirable.
