I took my axleshaft in to get it rechromed (no, not that kind of chrome) in order to correct damage done by a bad wheel bearing, and the tech chromed back too far, and obliterated the smaller diameter where the seal rides.

Does anyone have an Abody 7&1/4" axle shaft laying around that they can take measurements of? Mine is a 69, which is the more common one. Otherwise I am going to have to haul the other axle shaft out and sit in rush hour traffic for an extra hour just to give this guy the dimensions that he destroyed. Why didnt he measure before he chromed???

Anyway, if someone has those numbers, I would appreciate it.

They may, but this guy's local and he takes cash.

If it wasnt such a logistical nightmare, I could get a used one from NationalMoparts, but that would mean waiting until the weekend to get the thing together and a whole tank of gas to boot. Plus the chrome steel they spray onto the thrust surface is tougher than the original metal, so itll last longer.

If these louts just LISTENED, I might have had the old shaft fixed and in hand right now.

I just went out to the shop, but I don't have any axle shafts out of a housing. If no one else can help you, why not just remove the other shaft, and measure that one , or take it to the shop.

I really don't want to pull the other axle shaft and spend an hour in traffic just to get the dimensions. There's nothing wrong with the other side and no reason to pull it other than this idiot not meaasuring the shaft before he chromed it. But that looks like what I might have to do. Help...

I think I have a couple of 65 axles in the pile - they should be the same, right? I'll try to get some numbers for you, if you haven't already pulled the other side.

Here you go:

seal area is about 7/8" wide starting behind the bearing retainer.

shaft is 1.323" diameter in this area.

seal wear mark was 3 5/8" from the outer (machined) face of the axle flange.

I hope that's enough to get you going; I couldn't think of anything else to measure.

OK, the machined surface has three diameters: the shoulder closest to the flange that the bearing is pushed up against, the bearing surface itself, and the seal surface. The shoulder has been undisturbed, the machinist chromed from the shoulder all the way back to the end of the seal surface and machined it all to one diameter. So I now do not know what the diameter of the seal surface is or how far out from the shoulder it begins. Thanks for looking!
