I was just given a "four speed" out of an 83 D-100 pickup. I really don't know that much about the history of it, but he gave me everything except the linkages and shifter. I'd like to put this into a 66 Dart that currently has a 904 in it.

First of all how do I identify what this transmission really is? My brother has it and I have yet to actually see it.

My next set of questions involve how do I go about making this swap, but without knowing what the tranny really is, I'll wait and search this message board first.

Hi there!
This should be an overdrive 4speed. 4speed trannies have 3 shift levers on the side. if two of em point upwards and one points downwards (or otherwise, dont remember) it´s an overdrive unit. if all three point the same direction, its a close-ratio-gears unit with 1:1 fourth gear.
installing this to an automatic car involves swapping a clutch assembly into the car, welding a shifter hump to the floor and fitting with the shifter linkage. a833 4sp is longer also (i think) so you might have to shorten the driveshaft. not a weekend job...

Thank you

I found that article at the end of my unch Thursday and didn't get a chance to read it until today. It definately looks like I have an A-833. Now to get it home, and find out how much work I have ahead of me.

I'm not expecting it to be a weekend job. This is my project car, that I am hoping to get started on some time soon.
