Well, I got my 8.8 explorer rear from Heckshemi and got it bolted in my '64 Dart last week. Everything was smooth and fit nicely.
I only had to buy a set of 8 1/4 shock mounts ($12 from pick-n-pull; I believe 8 3/4 mounts fit also) and an adapter u-joint ($12 from Napa; I found this part # from a gmader post who put a 8" rear in. It is the same part. The old # is 240-0353, the new # is 319). The brake line hooked up no problem and the rear brakes work fine. I have not hooked up the emergency brake cables yet.
The driveshaft fit with no problem, but I have only about a 1/2 inch of play, so I may shorten it 1 inch. Anyone know what the recommended amount of travel is?
This rear is MUCH stronger than the 7 1/4 that I broke and it has 3.73 gears with Trac-loc.
I'll be going to the track soon.

Keep us informed. When I went to the Pomona swapmeet last year, ( one of the biggest around), I didn't see ONE mopar rear end. That is when I went to plan B with the ford 8 inch. My point is that we need options like this.
By the way, what was the final cost on the whole shootin' match? This would be good know when others are making decisons about what to do.

Greg

I paid $350 for the rear, so $375. I have been looking for a 8 3/4 for about a year, but could not find one. This was a great alternative. 8)

Must be that 8 & 3/4s are hard to find in your area. I've managed to pick up 4 of them (for my 65 Dart convert, 65 Dart wagon, 65 Valiant convert and 65 Barracuda). I passed on a couple of 8 & 1/4s as I like the idea of being able to swap out center sections as needed.

Anyone know what the 8.8 weighs with brakes?

Anyone know about the late model Ford 7.5"?

Lou
