Well I found the problem. At first I was ecstatic. I dropped the tank part way, and was able to extract the sending unit.......................
Upon complete removal of the sending unit, I noticed it looked pretty rusty. Then I tried to move the float arm...it had some resistance. THEN the really bad stuff happened--I made the mistake of looking at the internals. Apparently the car must have sat for a VERY long time without much gas in it, because the entire sending unit is rusted up good. Peering into the internals, I noticed something that gave me pause--the electrical pickup the float arm is supposed to move against seemed a bit out of place. Closer inspection revealed it wasn't attached at all, and a slight shaking produced a most disheartening result--it simply fell out in two pieces..............
So that's what I have to look forward too when I finally get around to the fuel sending unit................

yeah it was wonderful ;) Too bad it wasn't the ground! There is a float and other assorted parts sitting in the bottom of my tank. I'm concerned I can't swap out the pickup tube since it appears to be 1 piece with the top. finding a replacement has been fruitless so far!

Several times I've had sending units corrode and I couldn't find replacements. I found that J.C.Whitney sells a universal one for Mopars; its instructions tell you to cut a big hole in the tank to install it seperate from the old pickup.

To avoid that I screwed the new resistor, arm, and float onto pickup tube in place of the old ones. Before I did that, I measured the motion of the original arm and bent the new arm to approximate it the best I could.

I've done it several times and it always has worked well. It is important that you make a good ground to the new sending unit.

I was looking at the tubes and wondering how they go through the top. They appeared to be 1 piece or atleast soldered. How did you remove them?

Thanks!
