I made it to the track for the first time today. It was a 2 hour drive to get there and everything went great. I'll post my times for my best run overall and see what you guys think.

R/T .389
60' 3.273
330 8.760
1/8 12.879
MPH 59.81
1000 16.426
1/4 19.383
MPH 76.73

My reaction times deffinitely need some work. I thought my 60' times were awful. The car just doesn't pull off the line. It takes a while and then it will really start to pull pretty good. I feel like my times were pretty slow for the mods that I've done.

Block 30 over
Head Ported and Milled for 9.0 to 1 Compression
Stock Size Valves
Comp Cams 264
Carter BBD on a Super Six Manifold
Clifford Shorty Headers
Rebuilt Transmission with a Shift Kit
Stock Rear with 2.76 Gears
Timing Set at 12 BTDC
Tires are 25.3 Inches Tall

I would run the RPM's up at the line but it still wouldn't pull when i launched. I know the gears are an issue but i feel like there's got to be something more. Another thing was, the transmission was holding first for a long time. I was shifting into third nearly to the finish line. I guess i have some things to sort out. Well, it was a fun experience anyway and I hope I can get some things worked out and improve on this next time. Any advice?

your right about the gears 3.91 would be better. I also close up the wieght slots in the distributor by half this will give you about 15degs in advance set idle at 17degs with two light stock spring you get 32degs at 2500rpms it helps off the line :)

3.91's aren't really an option on my daily driver. The car won't spin the tires from a stop in the wet. They will break loose right as it's about to shift into first and when it shifts it'll spin them. There's plenty of power after i get moving but getting moving is the problem. I don't have a tach to see when it really starts to pick up. The old motor had more pep off the line than this. I guess I'll plan on a distributor recurve soon. Could this be a big part of the problem with the other mods that I've done? Gears are also coming soon but the place I've been working closed down yesterday so I'm unemployed for the time being.

Can anyone weigh in on how my 60' times were with the 2.76 gears? Most everyone that has posted is running lower gears than I am so I'm having a problem knowing how much the gears are slowing me down off the line.

in 2003 with just a super six and a 7 1/4 with 2.76's my 60' times were in the 2.7 sec range
in 2004 with the headers and head work and the same 7 1/4 wioth 2.76's the dropped to the 2.5 range
later in aug 2004 I swapped to an 8 1/4 with 3.21's and the dropped again to 2.4's
this month with the rebuilt engine and the 8 3/4 with 3.91's they were in the 2.2-2.3 range

my daily driver 72 swinger seemed slow with the stock 3.23 gears so I swapped to an 8 3/4 posi w/ 4.30 gears. It is a 4spd over drive so it was still drivable on the road. my engine mods look to be about the same as yours, but the gear change was an awesome upgrade, the only problem I found now is traction.

60ft 2.17
330 6.4
1/8 10.1
1/4 15.8 @ 87 mph

I ran these times on March 30th but haven't got them posted until now. This was at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas.

R/T .3648
60' 2.9096
330' 7.9858
1/8 11.9968
MPH 61.27

The improvements over my last trip to the track are from carb tuning and a recurved the distributor.

This was a Muscle Car Shootout Bracket race. I made it to the 3rd round of eliminations. I ran faster each round and had to keep lowering my dial in. I broke out on the last round by .01!

The Dart grew a crowd each time I was in the pits. If I had a dollar for every person that had a story about a Slant 6 that day.....The announcer had a hey day with me also. I was running considerably slower than most cars and he had a good time wondering what I had under the hood on the PA. The best quote of the day was, "JUST breaking the speed limit at 61 MPH!"

Interest in our Slants has risen some over the past several years. Cars with Slants are mostly gone from shows and the street. Folks who remember them or grew up with them have fond memories and stories to tell.

Keep at the racing and hopefully there'll be a Texas Slant race this year!

Lou

I just got back from Texas Raceway in Kennedale, TX. Went to the track with a trunk load of junk from moving. Best run of the night was my first.

R/T .177
60' 2.94
330' 8.156
1/8 12.24
MPH 59.31

Those 2.76's are killing me!

You need to get about a 3000 stall converter in there. It won't stall high enough that you'll even notice it on the street, but it will help your 60' times quite abit.

It seems like the times I am running are very poor for the changes I have made to the motor. I don't really know where to start on tracking down what is holding me back. I know the gears are an issue. The converter is also an issue but not one that I see addressing soon. I am going to look back at the changes I made on my distributor recurve.

The car is dead consistent. I ran 12.24's on 3 of my 6 passes.

Unless my tach is incorrect (I have a suspicion), I am foot braking to about 1300 RPM. Absolute slug until it hits 2000 RPM and it really start to come alive and pull.

I checked my initial timing and it is set at 11 BTDC.

Next, I am going to paint timing marks on the balancer and check the timing curve.

Also, I have a new tach to install to make sure my information is accurate.

what dist springs are you using and have you limited the adv by closing up the weight slot in the dist.for racing you should try 15 to 17degs initial with all in at 2600rpm.make sure 32 degs is the max at 10/1 pump gas with octane boost.

I have welded the slots in the distributor. I am running the stock heavy spring with a lighter than stock light spring from a chevy distributor kit. I thought I had removed the heavy spring and left the light one. In the next few days, I am going to try the light stock spring with the other lighter spring and see how it goes. What do you guys think?
