I've been doing alot of work to my Valiant, but I've left the engine alone since it runs fine. Is it possible to get about 20-25 more hp out of the slant without working on the head, block, or using nitrous? A super six setup is good for 5-10 hp from what everybpody says. What about a super six intake and a header? Is using an Offenhauser 4bbl. intake practical if you're not going to work on the head or make any cam upgrades? Aside from keeping the engine tuned/using synthetics, what else can I do to squeeze some more power out of it? It's a stock 76 engine, with a catalytic converter.

If your state doesn't require any kind of emissions inspection eliminating the cat converter would help. An upgrade to a larger diameter exhaust pipe. Replace the stock fan with a clutch fan.

Headers or Dutra Duals into single 2.5" exhaust, Holley 390 4bbl or 350 2bbl on Offy intake, recurve distributor. That stuff should get you at least 20 HP. Take some time tuning the timing advance and carb jetting...

Also do a real careful valve lash adjustment.
As Lou stated, recurve the distributor and make sure the engine see lots of advance right off idle.
