I don't like this.

1) The fuel filter is positioned horizontally, which means liquid fuel can get pushed into the carburetor by heat.

2) The fuel filter is above a high-heat area, further heating up the fuel (and increasing fire risk in the event of a fuel filter failure.

3) The fuel filter is plastic, instead of metal.

4) The fuel filter is in the way when you remove the valve cover to adjust the valves.

I'm not sure why your father thinks the fuel filter needs to be over the valve cover. It should be vertical, and behind the alternator, over on the cool side of the engine, out of the way and away from heat sources.

I've had one of those plastic fuel filter housings collapse on me once. If you want something seethrough for eye candy, find one of those glass case ones. Can't remember where I saw those.

How would a glass one break unless you threw something at it?

Heat, or a wayward pebble. Long shot, but hey. You can spray a lot of gasoline around in there before the bowl runs dry.

Heat? Enough heat to melt glass in an engine compartment? If your running that hot.......

I'm not saying glass is safer then a metal one, but chances of either one failing from breakage are very slim as it is, wayward pebble or not.

Judging by the rest of the engine compartment, looks aren't top priority so just stick with a metal one and be done with it.

It doesnt have to melt it, just crack it. Ive done it in the microwave enough times

I wish there was a way to safely watch the fuel roll by. I suppose if you found a big jesus sediment bowl out of a diesel tractor you might be safe. With diesels youre okay because its flash point is much higher. The 1920 style fuel bowl was also available in glass, it's a thick mother and it came on the 1902 or something, D/W has a pic of one I think...

You wouldn't have to throw anything at it; your radiator fan could take care of that nicely. Or, y'know, something else could do it in a collision, adding fire to a bad situation.

Ok, Dan, then I must cut more of my fuel steel fuel line and put the second filter behind the alternator vertically?

Talking about metal fuel filters, here in Mexico City is almost as easy to find those as finding the Holy Grail, but I want to put a new filter, secondary got 4 years there!!. Originally Chrysler sold the Duster with a primary metal fuel filter, but after 80´s it was very difficult to find those.

And crystal filters, are almost a myth here.

Is there a specific reason for the second filter??

Seems you should only need one, or worse case, if you have to have a secondary filter, locate the first one back at the fuel tank. Just wondering.

Also thought I'd throw in that in case you ever want to easily adjust your valves, make sure to build in some slack in the system to allow the valve cover to wriggle out from under.

Mexican Dusters from 70-74 got a primary filter from gas tank to fuel pump, and the secondary filter from fuel pump to carb, don´t know why they make this but, I can tell that the fuel that reach carb is always very clean.

Now is more easy to check both filters and reemplaze when needed, if primary was on the tank it will be a nightmare to check and change.

I imagine this 2-filter setup was used because of the notoriously poor-quality/dirty Pemex Mexican fuel. I understand that the quality and cleanliness of Mexican gasoline is much better now than it used to be.

Yep, that is right SSDan in mid 60´s until mid 80´s Pemex fuel was so lean and dirty that almost all cars with enought space got two fuel filters (first for tank to pump, second for pump to carb/injectors). Right now quality improved a little and is more clean, I still use original setup ´cauze primary filter protects my fuel pump and maintain a good and clean fuel that feeds my carb.

Here are the last pics of my fuel line
