I'm building a 904 automatic for a daily driver, engine will be mildly improved with 2bbl, mild cam, better exhausts etc., not a racer. Any suggestions on upgrades to the tranny? Currently bone stock and needing rebuild.

No mods required. If the budget permits, and the additional cost isn't much, maybe the v-8 clutch pack and a shift kit. But I wouldn't woory about doing it. One thing I would reccommend, is a trans pan with a drain plug.

Charrlie is right on...wearing ATF in your hair is no fun at all.
I have had the best luck running type f fluid in my 904's -
Have been told it cuts down on wear/friction. Either ways best of luck..

I forgot to mention, as with any tranny I would definetly reccomend an
external tranny cooler. Usually available for $50 or under-- This is cheap
insurance for the life of your 904. I run one on everything I got...

Actually the type "F" fluid has a higher coeffecient of friction then dexron. This will allow the clutches and bands to "grab" a little better. But it also will cause the bushings and thrust washers to wear "slightly" faster. This amount of faster wear is nothing to worry about. On a street trans, I would just stay with dexron. I agree with the trans cooler, Just didn't think to mention it (senior moment). I have one on every vehicle I own, with a auto trans.

Thanks for the advice, you confirmed what I thought. I've heard about the V8 clutch pac and shift kits and will do that. I also run trans coolers on everything I own. Can I get a drain plug pan or do I have to weld a drain into the pan? Also, anything special on the torque converter or just use what I've got?
