After two minutes warming up, my auto trans '68 Valiant doesn't really grab gears well, forward or reverse. The car operates fine for the most part when it's luke-warm, and erratic when it's hot. I changed both my tranny and rear fluids today, no change, in fact maybe worse. Reverse is the worst: you can hear the rear clunking and TRYING to grab and it sortof does, and the car kinda vibrates and coasts in reverse. The same can be said about any forward gear, but they finally grab properly.

I just had my late 70's 225 swapped out and a '66 225 & tranny were installed. The rear never had problems like this before, and I've only had the car back 2 weeks (so it's not my driving). Do the cables need adjusting? I know the '66 year still used cables, and I know they used them on my car. Is my rear toast? This is my daily driver, please help.

Ryan

You need to determine wether the problem is the trans or the rear. Is the kickdown linkage connected? If not, the trans may be burned up.
PS: the 66 trans is not cable shifted, 65 was the last year for cables.

Then I guess I have a '65 motor and not a '66, because I drove the car for 4 yrs with linkage, and this feels totally different on the column, and the column itself didn't change

About determining the problem, how do I find out which part is the trouble? I don't know. The kickdown linkage was something I was unaware of though, I've never had any kickdown on this car. It only shifts up when you slow down or come to a complete stop.

It sounds like the trans is your problem. You need to see if the kickdown linkage is installed, between the carb and the lever on the trans. If it is there it needs adjusting. A torqueflite trans MUST have this linkage connected and properly adjusted, (unless using a full manuual valve body) to keep from burning up the trans.
