 Post subject: rough transmission shift
PostPosted: Sun Jul 31, 2005 11:35 pm
my 73' scamp transmission automatic shifts and somewhat hard. i can feel it and hear it when it shifts. I am not sure if its cable misadjusted, u joint, or the tranny its self. I have not been under my car to inspect the u joint nor have I looked at the cable........just as I am typing this I figure the only way to figure out what the problem is that maybe i need to do the inspection! is there anything else i might be missing?

Don't you worry about harsher shifting. Start having a headache when you fill like "driving miss daisy" kinda shifting, that's where potential damage may occur. :)

otherwise, too much line pressure can blow some seal away... but as I like to approach to that: I can easily drop the pan, change blown seal or something and while I'm at it replace filter and oil, the whole job maybe 2 hours, but if my tranny gets screwed up with clutches wear and band wear, etc, I have to drop the whole thing and spend more money and time for that work....

So, I adjust my linkage to have firm shifts that can be compatible with kinda normal everyday driving (My car is my daily... I started as a "project car maybe for driving on weekends" and soon I got sick of post '79 production cars and sold all my crap away)

Disagree. Harsh shifts are a problem. Firm shifts are desireable. It's not the same. A firm shift is a quick, decisive one without any slop, without any bangs, scrapes or other noises, without any jerking feeling or period of no-drive.

A harsh shift might involve a jerking feeling, a sloppy/dragged-out feeling, a brief period of no-drive between gears, and/or bangs, clanks or scraping noises.

Harsh shifts can be caused by improper band adjustment (too loose), a dirty filter, contaminated or worn-out fluid, improper type of fluid, improper throttle pressure ("kickdown") linkage, sticking valves in the valve body, or (rather rarely with this transmission) internal hard-part faults.

Firm shifts are achieved through proper band adjustment, proper type of fluid, and a few valve body tweaks to set up the shifts to be firmer than stock.

that's what I meant to say, all in proper words (except for jerking feeling and all that verbal abuse  )

dan, what valvle body mods I have to do for reducing 1-2 and 2-3 overlap and improove the fliud circulation on my valvle body? or should I get a trango stage 2 kit? let me know.

Juan

I like TransGo/Transco's kits, yes. Stage-1 or Stage-2, up to you.

Nooooooo...we're talking about the transmission here. The intake and exhaust valves are in the engine.

Hi!

I was wondering if I did right thing when I adjusted the kickdown linkage. I had very soft shifts and it felt in 2-3 shifts that engine revved between the gears (no overlap??). And it shifted rather early to bigger gear I think. Is it OK to adjust the linkage or better way to adjust the line pressure. It shifts little later which I like. Shifts are quick and you can feel them but there is no noises and jerkin feeling. One thing I worry. At winter when it is about 0 or 5 fahrenheit and car is cold it starts to jerk in about 30 mile/h and runs evenly if you accelerate to about 35. It was even before the adjustment. Is there anything to worry?

Thanks Jukka

Slippage between gears. Not a good thing.

Both settings must be adjusted properly.

Yes, but without more detail it will be difficult to point you in the right direction to start looking in order to solve this problem.

Sorry, I propably did something wrong yesturday, didn't log in.

Well, here is more details about the shifts. Trans is equipped with lockup converter. 225 engine with 2bbl Carter. Before linkage adjustment it shifted to third gear in about 30 mile/h when accelerating with gas pedal 2/3 or 3/4 pushed. Rather early I think when I compared it to Volvo 264 or Daihatsu Charmant? And it had slippage between 2-3 gears and shifted very softly. I adjusted the linkage something between 1/4 - 3/8 in taller. Now it shifts to third in about 40 m/h when pressing pedal 2/3. And the slippage disappeared. Does these values sound good :?:

Problems at winter appears while driving maybe first mile, not much longer. When the car gets little warmer it acts quite normally. When cold and when accelerating calmly the trans shifts normally 1-2 shift but immediately after shifting 2-3, the whole car starts to jerk. This happens if the speed is about 30 m/h. If I accelerate faster and 2-3 shift happens in 40 m/h or later it don't jerk. Is it possible this has something to do with the lockup :?:

Thanks
Jukka
