I got my two barrel conversion running tonight on my '69 Dart GT. Started right up but has a hesitation from idle. I haven't fiddled with the carb at all yet so I'm not too concerned. I want to adjust my valve clearances because they are kind of noisy. My Chiltons says intakes @.010 and exhausts @ .020 when hot. Are those good numbers? If so mine are way loose! Also where should my vacuum advance hose connect on a Carter two barrel carb? The Chiltons says TDC for timing. Any suggestions or is that about right? Bone stock except for the two barrel and manifolds. Also how do I disable the egr valve? Alot of questions I know, but I want this to run right since my wife will be driving it more than me. I also see an HEI conversion in the near future.

What I would recommend it to get the correct distributor that was used with the Super Six setup. This would be distributor part number 3874876 and it uses 12º BTDC base timing. You will find that distributor on most slant 6's starting in about 1977 on through about 1980 or possibly later.

There is no reason or need to get a "Super Six distributor"—the distributors used in the Super Six years have curves set up for use with an emission control system most of which you do not have (or want). Your '69 distributor might not have an optimal curve, but it's got a fairly decent one. Don't use TDC as your base timing setting, start with 5° BTDC (with vacuum hose disconnected, idling at 650 RPM in Neutral).

Vacuum advance gets hooked to... (are you ready?) ...the one and only vacuum advance port on the Carter BBD carburetor! It's smack dab in the middle of the passenger side of the carb, pointing to the valve cover, and is exactly the right size for the hose coming from the distributor.

EGR valve gets disabled by leaving the hose off of it or, if you want to make a clean job of it, replacing the valve with a blockoff plate—make it yourself or buy off eBay, I don't see any on there now, but I see them go by (made out of polished aluminum) regularly.

0.010" and 0.020" hot are good numbers, use this procedure to adjust the valves.

Get a factory manual; too much incorrect (and omitted) info in Chilton/Haynes books.

good ideas on the distributor but try 2 stock light springs, and set timing 32degs at 2200rpms with vacum disconnected. this will give you 2-4 degs base time and 32 degs at full throttle no vacum,if you want more base timing close up wiegh slots in distributor.
