well all is back together. head, intake exhaust. im sure there is a good reason, but why with the new head gasket on and all back together, was the rockers WAY TOO TIGHT? like holding the vavles partially open-tight? i adjusted them, and did a compression check. a couple cylinders at 90, some at 30.....and a gurgling hiss on compression... im hoping this is just a case of lack of oil on the rings from the engine not runnig for a coupla weeks. :roll:

Did you shave the head? If the head is shorter, and you're using the same push rods, the rockers will be tighter. Depending on what gasket you're using, it could also factor in.

nope no head shaving at all. i had to take the head off to get a wrung off stud out, at the machine shop. new head gasket, intake and exhaust off of a different car, new intake and exhaust gasket, and the one inbetween the intake and exhaust.. i didnt keep track of which pushrod went where. but theyre all in adjustment now. aftert the battery charges, im hoping not to have an explosion. first time going that deep into a motor.

Gurgling makes me think there is a leak from compression to the cooling system.

They make hand pumps with a radiator cap at the end, that you attach to your radiator and pressurize the system. You may want ot try one of those (or make one yourself out of a old radiator cap, hose barb, and bicycle pump?). Make sure you don't go above 10 or 15 psi. Take your spark plugs out and pray you don't get water out of them....

For that matter take your plugs out all together and crank engine over....

When you put the head gasket on, you made sure to take care of whats back and whats front right? Because the gasket is not symmetric. There is a dowl locating pin on the front and rear of the head thats offset from one another. If your dowel pins were missing, the gasket may of went on the wrong way. Long shot but who knows.....
