Good morning,

I'll be upgrading my points distributor to Electronic this weekend and was wondering what a good coil would be to go with that. I'd like to upgrade it GM's HEI using the conversion I've seen here. Perhaps the Accel Super Stock street or MSD blaster?

Comment and question....Away!

A stock coil will keep up just fine as long as you don't go over 6,000 RPM.

Don't use a points coil with a magnetic pickup distributor. It will work, but won't be reliable and you'll eventually roast the coil. The magnetic pickup distributor / EI system produces slightly higher primary voltage I believe. They are two different part #'s for a reason. I've heard more then one story about poeple upgrading to mopar EI and cooking the points coil after some miles.

If you want to stick with a stock style coil, ask for one from a 73-76 duster w/EI. Otherwise, you can use an MSD blaster 2 if you want fancy aftermarket.

You sir, are correct! Mine lasted a week after converting to electronic ignition.

Did you use a ballast resister????

If so, was it the points ballast resister or electronic ballast resistor.

I would think that with a proper ballast resistor you wouldn't need to change the coil

As an example (I'm making up values here)

Points coil resistance 1.5 ohms points ballast resistor 1 ohm.... (total 2.5 ohm)

Electronic coil 2 ohms electronic ballast resistor 1.5 ohm. (total 3.5 ohm)

points coil 1.5 + electronic ballast 1.5 (total 3.0 ohm)

I can see you buring out the coil in this case with either ballast resistor, but if you use a 2 ohm ballast resistor it might should be ok........

Just think that you can match any coil with a proper ballast so that you don't burn up the coil or the electronic ignition, and as ballast resistors are cheaper, Id want to do that

So you suggest increasing ballast resistance to accomodate for the higher energy? That completely defeats the point of having a beefier ignition to begin with.

The original post indicates GM HEI module, not even the mopar EI module. I'd say mate it with an msd coil, no ballast, and go.

I've seen a few posts on moparts indicating failed Accel coils so I would shy away from those if msd blaster is availible for the same price.

Ballast resistance as an easy (i.e. cheap) way to match existing components with new components.....

A Pertronix can use existing points coil, I don't see why you can't get the Mopar box to use it....

I even think the MSD box can use the existing coil (but no ballast)

Thanks for all the good info folks. I'll probably upgrade to the Blaster 2 coil and the GM Hei module, save myself some trouble in the long run I hope.

I use MSD6 with the original ballast resistor, standard coil and points :?

Hi,
The original post said he is switching to GM HEI. One advantage of GM HEI is you get rid of the GOOFY ballast resister. Any parts store can sell you a coil made to operate without resistance in the circuit.

I'm putting in another vote for the MSD Blaster if you gotta have a coil that mounts in the stock location. Another good choice (especially if you're going junkyard hopping) is the spool-type coil used with HEI systems that don't have the coil built into the distributor cap.
