Well, I recently built a slant that died way to early due to lack of break in, and poor oiling (I think). What is the secret for improving oiling to the rods and mains. What I am really asking is what is the formula for building a bullet proof bottom end for my performance street slant. Its got to be sturdy because its in my truck and I use it to haul things and haul a$$!!! Please help, I want this one to last!

H'm. Was this a stock or near-stock rebuild? Or a race engine? Reason I ask is that there's usually not a need to increase the bottom-end oiling over stock. (Not to say there aren't improvements that can be made—there are—but just to say that such improvements are seldom actually *necessary*.) Cast crank engine? Forged crank engine?

holley 390cfm 4bl electric choke
offenhauser 4bl intake
1977 stock head, newly rebuilt only mod is 3 angle valves and 360 valve springs
headers
straight pipes with flow masters, no cats
comp cam duel pattern- advertised dur at 260, dur at.50 is 212, lift is .440, and sep is 110
lifters are comp cam flat tappet hydro
accell cut to fit wires
accell super stock coil
MSD 5 box
stock points distributor w/light recurve springs installed
converter is stock
tranny is stock 727
rear gears are unknown but stock, they seem kinda high for a truck

Doc had some suggestions for oiling improvements here: http://www.slantsix.org/articles/dutra- ... blocks.htm

The SL6 oil system is pretty basic, some general deburrring is usually all that is needed. The biggest two restriction points are in the oil pump and at the cam bearings.

Increased oil flow by elimating passageway restrictions is a nice thing to do, this allows good oil flow without using excessive pressure. As we know, increasing oil pressure increases the load on the oil pump / cam gear and that can cause early gear failure.

Also check the main cap bolts to be sure they are the correct length.
The oil passages leading down to the crank bearing pass right thru the bottom of the cam side main cap bolt holes. If you use a longer then stock bolt or stud in this location, it will choke-off the passageway and reduce oil flow down to the crankshaft bearings.

Thanks for the great link, I wish I would have read this prior to building my last slant. Any good articles on crank prep available?

There is not much extra work to do with the crank.
Deburr it, chamfer thr oil holes and then have the crank reground and balanced.

Did you say hydraulic lifters in an 85 block with a 77 head? Did you make sure the top end was oiled correctly for the hydro cam?

2.94 is a common gear for a slant six truck. Not very favorable for towing and keep the tires small. I'll be putting 3.21 gears into mine soon. It won't help the oiling other than by keeping the RPMs up a little  Towing with higher gears would be easier and maybe make the engine last a little longer.

WHoa that is one heck of a point that I have never considered, a 77 head is solid cam and a 85 is a hydro. Would the oil passages be the same in both heads?

Oil passages are the same but the valve cover, rocker arms, pushrods are different.
