Well, Finally got around to swapping out the Autolite 66's that were in my car, and replaced them, per SSD's instructions, with NGK's. I removed the little metal o-rings that were there and she fired right up. Which in my eyes is always a good thing.

Ok, question is this. As I was removing the old spark plugs, I noted what each one looked like. I also put them away in the order they came out. Goes like this:

Recommendations, Questions, Comments. Let 'em fly.

On a side note, I'll be trying that BG 44k stuff to clean out the top end as soon as I can find a place around here that sells it.

Which ones? ZFR5Ns or something else?

Reddish: Someone used fuel or a fuel additive that contained Manganese Methylcyclopentadienyl (MMT).

White: Plug was running hot. Possible vacuum leak at that cylinder.

Black and oily: Faulty ring and/or valve sealing in that cylinder.

Bet that's part of your rough idle. You should be able to clean those vac leaks up when you do the super six install.

Could also be related to a bad miss caused by the plug or wire. This will also have a play in the rough idle.

A car so old, has surely spent part of it's life sitting without being run. This could have caused some corrosion in the bore, which may break back in if you are lucky and treat it nice. Change the oil regularly to keep it nice and fresh rather than continously changing it 'a quart at a time', (or topping it off) which simly leaves the oil to get blacker and blacker.

Yes, I put in the the NGK ZFR5N's like SSD said.

I haven't added any fuel crap-ola, so I'm guessing the guy before me might have. I'll check for vacuum leaks when I install the EI and new carb. Thanks guys.

I'm also going to change the oil this weekend so we'll see if that helps some. Any recommendations as to what weight and brand?

I run cheap 20-50 in the truck because it burns the stuff so quick, but I haven't picked an oil for the other two, since they seem to keep the same 5 quarts for thousands of miles. :D

The 15-40 diesel oil meets higher standard than most car oil and there ain't no reason you can't run it in a car. :?:

Do a search, a few weeks back, we pondered the many choices in an oil selection post.

P.S. I don't suggest you go synthetic. I had bad luck switching old motors this late in life. (the motor, not me)
