sorry for rehashing old threads, but I need a quick question answered. I have a 75 S6 motor with 85K miles. the motor was out for "cleaning". it was not dissassembled. I went to check the valve lash cold, and they were all different settings. The manual says .010 intake, .020 exh. hot. Now, what is a good starting point for cold settings? I assume looser....

Cold settings 0.023" exhaust, 0.013" intake. Heat up engine good and hot, adjust from there.

To adjust your valve lash:
1. Get the car good and warm. Take a drive. Idling alone won't do it.

2. Shut her off and remove the valve cover. This requires some rearranging of hoses, just disconnect and reconnect them.

3. Turn her back on and get used to 2 things: Hot oil spitting around and the feeling of a socket wrench moving all over the place while on the rocker arms. I got a bloody knuckle doing this. I love bloody knuckles.

4. Make sure you have a set of feeler gauges with .009
.010 .011 .019 .020 and .021.

5. Remember that the order goes I E I E I E E I E I E I. Look at the manifold before you stick a gauge in there.

6. When you slide the feeler gauge in there you want a tight fit, but not so tight it grabs and won't let go. There should be just enough play that you can slide it back out. That said, some people use slightly tighter or looser settings. It can take some experimenting to find out what works best for your car.

7. Go down the line and adjust each valve. Then go back and double check them. Spend a good 45 min to an hour while you have the cover off. Make it right.

8. Also make sure to carefully remove any old gasket so it doesn't get into the oil when you pull off the valve cover. If your gasket needs replacing use the MOPAR rubber version. Cork is not worth messing with.
