I got my son this for his 64 Dart. We are having some issues.
Background:

When we took off the wires from the coil. the positive side of the coil wire just ended in the wiring harnes. Very weird I thought. The negative side of coil had power running to it w/ a condensor can attatech and another wire going to the points.

Now. We installed the kit. .Have the gap set and have the ground wire going to the negative side of the coil .. we SWITCHED the power wire to the positive side of the coil. as it has to have power, correct? Atleast I would think so. Also when the wire (with the power) is OFF the coil it read 12+ volts. Connected to the coil.. it has 9.x volts.

Also I Ohm'd the coil which came out to 1.8ohms. I read in the instructions it should be read 1.5 .. so I figure thats close enough???

Im really baffled as I sure the wiring has been hacked from the previous owner. So any suggestions on how the power/grounds need to be arranged on this thing I would appreciate.

Rick

the voltage is suppossed to be less than 12 @ the coil.

the (-) is right, but you need to run the (+) wire to the 12V side of the ballast resistor OR any other switched 12V source. its a good idea to use the one on the ballast.

i've used Pertronix quite a bit and have been pleased. but what part # do you get for the slant?

The Pertronix Part # : 1361A

Now just to make sure I understand what your stating:

We have the (-) side setup correctly or we need to leave it like we found it??

We do have the power source (from ballast) to the (+) side of the coil and a switched power (12v) for the red lead on the Pertronix piece. Now should that be on the (+) side of the coil??

Thanks!

Rick

the (-) black wire goes to the coil (-) side. you should have 9.5-10V @ the positive side of the coil. that wire goes from the ballast to the coil.

the (+) red wire on the pertronix unit needs 12V. so, it needs to go to a switched source that DOES NOT go thru the ballast resistor. the easiest way to do that is to check the voltage on both sides of the ballast. one side should have 12V, the other side 9-10V.

hook the red wire into the side with 12V.

it sounds to me like you have it hooked up correctly.

you should have nice, hot fire now.

The pertronix will work with the red wire hooked up to the + terminal of the coil even though the voltage is a little low because of a ballast resistor........

That's how I installed mine and it never gave me any trouble.

Well for some reason ours just doesnt wanna fire!

Is there a way to test the Perntronix piece to see if its actually sending a signal to the coil or not??

Thanks!

Rick

Edit: Got thru to Pertronix. Sent me a PDF file on how to test the solid state piece.

The Tech guy did state that "some" Chrysler dizzy's have problems w/ grounding. So if the solid state is ok, he told me to run a ground wire from the stud/nut to a good ground.

So gonna go try this out...
