hello doctor d and other sages: need your quick and appreciated advice on 2 questions:1. is there an easy source for speedometer pinions that is the plastic gear on the end of the speedo cable where it goes into the transmission? i am seeking this summer to switch the 7.25 2.93 rear axle assembly in my 76 feather duster to one witha3.23 ratio for better driveability(it has the 4 spd od and its sluggishness is starting to wear out its welcome). i will need to change the pinion so the speedo will be accurate with a 3.23 rear. are they available anywhere. i assume they are the same for sticks and automatics. 2.on the same duster i need toreplace the rear leaf springs this summer. all dusters i have seen have one more leaf in each side than this rare model i have, the lightweight feather duster. doyou think it will make any difference in safety and driveability if i use the regular(new) duster springs or should i pull out one leaf to maintainthe original design. i dont want the coupe being so stiff in the rear that it jumps and shifts(unsafe) if ihit a bump on a left or right turn. a local sage says each leaf adds about 500lbs of carry ability and would be stiffer. thanks tons for your advice. regards bob f. callpaladin@aol.com

Try this link. the pinions are as close as your local dealer. You can also try a trans shop most have a box of used ones laying around. The last 2 didgits of the part # are the number of teeth.

Careful on used one, they are cheap to buy new. Price up the one you want new first!

Cool project. I'm almost ready to put together my 76 Feather Duster, and have the same problem.
Since I upgraded my slant I swapped in an 8 1/4"
rear and transplanted a set of springs from another A-body in better condition. My local tranny shop, that pressed my bearings on my OD shafts for me, set me up with a kit that has a gasket ring, the speedo gear and the bobby-pin retainer (changing my ratio to 3.55:1).

Good luck-

-D.Idiot

P.S. These cars were very light! If you are doing a tech inspection of things check for stress cracks in the door jambs and on the aluminum bumper welds, I have found them in both of my Feather Dusters and now have to get my bumpers tigged back together before they fall off... :(

Anyone got a 40 tooth pinion laying around? I need one for my '79 Aspen R/T 360-4 which recently got some 3.90 gears in the 8-1/4" axle. I converted the speedometer cable to the earlier '66-'76 style to use the pinions with the metal shaft. Got a cable out of a '75 Dart, and it was the right length. Just need a 40 tooth now. I have a 39, but want perfection in my speedometer calibrations.
