I have a 52 plymouth with the stock flathead and 3spd/OD. I want to keep it all mopar, and was thinking about a slant/833 combo because its easy and straight forward. But then on the the hand, the push button was always super neat, so here are some questions:
Which is a better trans for what applications, a 904 push button or the 727 push button?
And are the gear selection mechanism on the dash interchangeable between the two?
and I guess anything else I should consider that might be involved in this?
(cost of parts, failure rates, availability, etc)

Put the V-8 guts in a 904 and you will never break it with a Slant. The fast race car guys don't even use 727's.

sweet, thanks slantzilla. so now my questions are, do I get the A904 for a small or large v8? and what years are interchangeable, most reliable, readily available?
and what intricacies am I facing?

904s only came behind 273-318-360s. (maybe 340s but i don't think so) in reality, unless you plan to go REALLY fast the slant 904 is just fine. of course, if you put the V8 guts it won't matter how hot you build the engine.

in either case you need to get the slant 904 case. it is different from the V8 case.

the cheapest way to do it requires you to have some tranny building knowledge. go to a local u-pull-it and pull one of each. a slant tranny and a V8 tranny (82 or newer car for the good gear set) get a rebuild kit and put all the V8 stuff into your slant case.

none of this will get you the push button option you want. BUT its an inexpensive and more efficient way to do it. the parts for the older trannies are harder to find. (even the speedo gears are tuff to get)

Awesome, thanks for the advice.
So I got the cash, who's got the parts I can purchase?!

The aspects I'm going for in this project are:
a) orginality; I haven't seen someone do a swap like this *yet* on a 50's plymouth
b) functionality; all the slant stuff is in my opinion amazingly well designed
c) cost of build/operation; the slant sixes are pretty cheap to build, buy parts for, and are good on gas (all relative to other MOPAR engine/trans combos)
I really would like to be able to utilize the push button for its 'cool' factor. Everytime someone mentions a push button, some else goes "I always thought that was really cool".
This is a Kustom project, and as shallow as it sounds, looks tend to come before the function (and sometimes the cost).
As far as I can tell the reason I would rather go for the later model trans, is simply for the slip-type tail housing.

(the more I talk about this the more excited I get)

It seems like you should be able to get the pushbotton control form an early 60's Mopar and cobble together a Lokar-style linkage tha would work with a later non-pushbutton transmission. Another interesting option would be the cable shifter used on A-100 vans and trucks in the 60s. It mounted on the dash and attached to non-pushbutton transmissions.

I love slants, don't get me wrong, but it's hard to beat prices or availability for a 318.

You might also look at A & A Transmissions. They have a conversion cable, P/N AACCP, for '66 and up TorqueFlites in a '62-'65 vehicle. It's $150, but might be cheaper than a Lokar setup.

BTW, couldn't find it online to link to it, but I found it in their catalog.

Just a thought.

Imperial Services has a conversion.

question...sort of on the same topic...
would it be possible/probable/worthwhile to get that kind of push button OD in a 71 slant 904?
the only reason i ask is that my slant will be seeing a lot of highway time very soon...just wondering if having a push button would improve highway mileage/driveability.
how much would this cost me?
