I bought an 8 3/4, '489 case, 3.55 cone style Sure Grip that had just been broken in off of ebay last october, and the guy never listed the type of yoke that it has? From what I understand, I either have a 7260 or 7290, correct? I searched and found this info. out:

7260- 2 1/8" Yoke I.D., 1.078" Cap Dia.
7290- 2 5/8" Yoke I.D., 1.126" Cap Dia.

I am not sure where exactly I am supposed to measure? Or, is there another way to tell what yoke I have, like numbers or markings?

I am also unsure about what spline count I have so that I can get the correct axles? How can I figure this out?

Any help is much appreciated!!! Pictures are nice too!!!

When it refers to cap, it means one of the 4 circular ends of the cross. Place a ruler across the opening - if its about 1", then 7260 - if its about 1 1/8" then its the 7290

Spline counts - how many "teeth" on the axles - same as the # of teeth on your surgrip unit - use a pencil or pick or fine instrument of choice and count.

No need to count the axle splines.
All OEM 8.75 rears have a 30 spline axle and carrier.

i don't think he's talking about axle splines. Wasn't there a coarse and fine spline on the pinion where the yoke goes on??

What I really meant on the splines was that I don't know how to figure out what spline count I have in my 3rd member? I can count how many are on my axles, but I don't know if the spline count on the axles matches with the spline count in the 3rd member? I will just count the number that is on my suregrip to find the spline count.

Oh. I think Charlie's reply answers that one but that has nothing to do with the yoke or U joint.

There are two spline counts for both 7260 and 7290 yokes, 10 (course) and 29 (fine).
There is only one axle spline count, 30. Therefore there is only one carrier spline count, 30, no matter what kind or brand carrier it is.
Even some Dana 60 rears out of 3/4 ton trucks had a 30 spline carrier. Stock 8.75 axles can be used after the housing is narrowed and Mopar ends installed.
There are two spline counts for aftermarket spools, 30 and 35. A stock axle can be used with the 30 spline spool, special axles are needed for the 35 spline spool.
FYI, the straps for the 7260 and 7290 yokes are NOT interchangeable, don't make this mistake and destroy your shaft.

Ok. I measured and found out that my yoke is a 7290. The cap was over an inch.
Sorry, I was confused . I was under the impression that the axles had to have the same spline count as the yoke. So, my axles, as long as they are the right length, will work, right?
Also, I will need to get a new driveshaft with the right ends on it (one side for the a904 and one side for the 7290) wont I?

No need to change driveshaft ends, you can get a special U-joint that is half 7260 and half 7290.
If you are converting from a 7.25 rear to a 8.75 rear, you will need to have the driveshaft shortened about 1.75".
