I made a mount to put 2-4" speakers where the origional 4x10 speaker used to be. These MB Quart speakers have a crossover that will need to mounted. I made the speaker mount out of particle board but I was thinking that I might remake it in some type of plastic, it would probabily last longer.
I could make a speaker box instead of a pannel, it would be a tight fit very hard to install but it would fit.

Very nice work. I've always wanted a two channel dash speaker setup. Making a box that will clear the heater controls will be a challenge. Just a fyi, but the original speaker should have been a 6" x9". Originally they used a funky bracket to mount the speaker to the dash. The bracket was stamped steel had 4 holes for the speaker and two to mount to the dash. It spaced the speaker down about 3/8".

I have taken a few 66 dashes apart but haven't had one with a speaker in it just assumed it was a 4x10 like so many old cars. woops.
I could easily make a box to fit over the heater controls, the close part is the part of the dash just above the heater controls. If the speakers were spaced back a bit that would solve the fit problem....I'll make one to see how it looks/fits.... it shouldnt take to long

It shouldn't be too hard to remove an original speaker. The original used such a tiny magnet that it easily clears the other things under the dash. Where you run into a problem is aftermarket speakers with a great big magnet they are always a very tight fit. If you really can't remove it just by unbolting the two end bolts I would say unbolt the heater controls and maybe the wiper linkage. I really don't remember if the wiper linkage is in the way.

Getting the end-bolts is the problem.........

They're screws from the top side. All I can see are the pointy ends of the screws that hold the speaker in.

I have no idea on how to get to the 'screw-head' to loosen the screws and get the speaker out.

If they were studs with nuts on, it would be easy.

Do you mean the 2 end bolts or the 4 corners of the speakers? Everyone one I've seen from the era had two studs welded in place to the bottom of the dash with two nuts holding up the plate.

Ok, now I see how it works........ Only had enough visibility to see 2 of the screws (the pointy end of the screw) holding the speaker. Didn't see the 2 end-bolts for the plate (conviently covered up by the hose ducting for the defroster).....


Still looks like everything is in the way (radio, ducting, glove box, heating controls........) to get to the speaker....

Glove box is easy to remove, so what else really has to be removed to get the speaker out???????

I don't think you really have to remove anything other than defrost ducts. I forgot about them cuz the last time I did it the hoses were already out. Worst case you will have to pull the wiper linkage and loosen the heater controls. It will always be a tight fit. I am considering replacing the plate mounted set-up on mine with what was used on the c body barges. They used a c shaped bracket (1 per end) that didn't space the speaker down any so clearance is greatly improved.
