Sandy, what brand pump did you use that went boom? I have a rebuild stirring in my mind and this oil pump thing has me concerned.

I used a new pump....stripped the gears...conked a good crank(in a week)....tossed the new pump ....lapped in an ancient 69 pump....installed it and had no problems. Old pumps rule.
OK, maybe I'll take another look at the old pump.... when you say you "lapped in" the pump, exactly what are you doing?

Im not sure what brand the new pump was...it came in a box of other stuff.

On my ancient 69 pump I just followed the old procedure of taking the cover off....checking the gears...(they were fine) ....and lapping the wear marks out of the cover on sheet of thick glass using good old Clover lapping compound.
Im not sure this is necessary....I just enjoy doing it...kinda "pig in clover" style.

I like the cover lapping idea. May do that on my next tear apart.

OK, now I know what you mean, and I know the process. I used to do that with VW jugs using 600 grit Wet/Dry paper and WD40 on a sheet of glass

 Went to move the engine and stand back into the corner, musta snagged an imperfection or a small piece of debris on the floor. Dumped that sucker right over onto the floor. Broke the oil pump in two, crushed the distributor into junk, bent the flexplate, broke two rocker arms and bent two pushrods. I've checked, CAREFULLY, every nook and cranny, but will take any and all ideas. RICK

Dang, thats a bummer. I have come close a couple of times. That is why I like the 4 leg stands better then the 3 leg ones. Since you said you broke rocker arms and bent push rods, I would look at the rocker shaft , and take a real close look at the rocker stands on the head, to make sure there are no cracks.

Ouch! Definitely inspect the head and block for possible cracks, especially the water pump cavity where it protrudes from the side of the block and the oil pan skirt around the bottom of the block. I think I would lay a straight edge across the water pump mating surface to be sure it is still true.

Hang on, cowboy, don't let her throw you!
Sorry to hear that the Slant is giving you a hard time. That is a long motor to have on a stand, with the center of gravity way out there. I had to move your old 170 block in my garage last night, as a matter of fact, and felt it wanting to tip the stand. And my garage isn't nearly as good as yours.
