I'm just curious how many members are running a slanted car that regularly gets 30mpg on the highway (28 would be close too...).

I'm curious about the following:

What are you driving.
Power and drivetrain options (225,A-904, 2.76 gearing, carburator...????)
If a late model(post 1973) is your EGR still hooked up, stock timing curve or ????
Road conditions (flat highway all the time, some hills, mexican overdrive from the top of Pike's Peak)
What is your average in town mileage?


Every so often the mileage thread gets dredged up and a lot of speculation gets thrown around (or the good old list of 'see Feather Duster' or tune-up/air up tires/lean out carb/lash valves properly). I just want to see how many members are daily driving to work and getting 'Honda' mileage.
(and I'm about to setup for another 'experiment' too)

I'd say that nobody gets 30 mpg "regularly" with a Slant or any Mopar for that matter (even a Rabbit engined Horizon). Try asking again at 20+ mpg. There will be a few people who actually can get that much with careful driving but I'll bet that realistically (read that "honestly" fellas) most Slanters get between 12 and 18 mpg.

My 225 Duster gets about 16 city. It has an 8.25 with 3:55 gears and 904.

I can get close in the Valaint. 65 Valiant ,,,,3000lbs fully fueled with driver and passenger. 225... BBD on Alum Super6. 9.25CR....comp 262 cam. 3.23 gears ....5 speed OD. The key is to drive at 60mph (below the aerodynamic threshold) and above 50,,,where you need your foot in it all the time.

We never do any city driving,,,,the car has no fan, PS, PB and has 30lbs air in the tires. Advance is set for mileage....motor is fresh....NGK zrfn plugs. regular Canadian 87octane.

On a trip across the prairies in 2000? with 5 people in the car my GF(Lightfoot) got 30mpg Canadian on one tank (300 miles) at 60mph.(worn engine) ambient temp 50F.....headed East...(downhill, down wind)

Eddie would get high 20's (28 was the best on the flat highway drive to work) driven conservatively with the stock 170, 1920, no p/s, no fan, 2.76 gears, and the 5-spd. Tire size was 195/75-14, ride height lowered. Weight is probably a little under 3000 (gutted int, no bumpers, etc), but I haven't measured it.
Now it's probably high teens with the BBD, cam, ported/shaved peanut head, and 3.55's, but it's way more fun, which = foot in it more often and further.

No one believes that my 96 Breeze 5-spd got 39.6 on Rt 81 coming home from CT, but it's the truth. Shoulda kept that car...

Our '76 feather duster is pushing 31 or 32 mpg on the highway with ease... Have not done to much in town driving with it but I'll chime in some
more on this after the weather starts warming up

my 75 duster 225 got 26 mpg with a holley 390 four barrel, clifford headers and intake, and the 3-speed. stock everything else. never had any trouble in the winter either. it was my daily driver for 5 years and before that my dads for 9. it is now parked waiting for the engine to come back from the rebuilder


......my 95 4 door neon gets 35 mpg......5-speed SOHC 4 popper.

Friend of mine from MI drove his bone stock 74 Duster 225/904 276 gears from Ann Arbor to the Nats at Columbus and got 28 MPG. That was at 55MPH. The tinworms got to the car; however, the power train lives on in somebody's Dart or Valiant.

My '68 Dart is regularly getting 25MPG on the hwy now, and I average 70-75MPH. I think with a 5spd it might top 30 with slower speeds. Even the OD auto sucks a fair amt of efficiency. It is port EFI and a mild motor. I'm quite happy, as I have not filled a tank at less than 18MPG since I got the EFI tuned well. This includes mixed/city driving.

I will be trying for 30, but the 68 is not the most aerodynamic. '64 might be better, or a Duster.

I average about 20-21 MPG in my Duster, and that was with a worn out Holley 1945. I don't know if my mileage will go up or down with the BBD.

I get around 10-11 MPG with my D-150. This thing will drink some gas. Has 3.25 gears out back. Gotta love that dumb lean burn computer.

I get about 25-28 MPG in my Fifth Avenue. That is very impressive for a car of that size with a V-8. 2.25 gears have a lot to do with that also.

I wish I knew what you guys were doing to get that kind of mileage out of your slants. I traded my truck for the Dart thinking I'd get better gas mileage than my F350 with a 460. Nope.

For about 2 mpg more, I get a car with bad attitude, but no place to put my ladder...


I don't really regret it though, my car is a lot of fun to drive, and with the condition I was lucky enough to get it in, I get a lot of comments when I drive around. How much difference does the gearing really make for mileage?
