I'm fired up! The Dart feels like a rocketship and withstands rush hour traffic w/no worries. Still paranoid I'm gonna blow something up.

Hafta wait until 1 PM to leave tomorrow (Neal working).

Seymour is leaving a 6 AM so should be at the Pizza Hut for dinner. His 13 sec grocery getter is packed and ready to go.

See you all Saturday morning,

Lou

Weather was good, a little windy SAT and hot on SUN.

Participants were Mike J, Dennis, Seymour, me (George H), Lou and Neal in the Turbo Dart, and Mike Evans in the Aspen and Ryan on Sunday with the Turbo Valiant.

Results:

SAT:

1. Mike J
2. Dennis S
3. George H

SUN:

1. Mike J
2. George H
3. Neal (in the turbo Dart)

Good time was had by all, nothing broke so far as I know. Ryan came out with the Turbo Valiant but he wasn't able to get a good run in due to the excessive torque converter slippage from a new converter.

Pics to follow...

Hey George,

So you had 6 racers for Saturday and then added Ryan on Sunday for 7 racers that day?

Just trying to make sure my math is right for points... Thanks!

Yes, but Ryan did not race due to the transmission. He ran some time trials only.

We had a really, really, really REALLY really good time at this event. The car ran very well (but slow, but good) and I was actually able to win a couple rounds. I'm glad I held off on trying to get the turbo installed and then pull my hair out troubleshooting it at the race. I did a little tuning during the weekend but it was mostly turn the key and race for the EFI Duster.

Lou and Neal had no trouble with the new turbo in the Dart however. They drove it down here from Minnesota, raced it, and drove it back on what was basically a brand new setup. Unless something happened on the way back, it was flawless and I know on at least one run Lou dipped into the 14s with it, and he was taking it very very easy on it.

Mike J and Mike E's cars ran flawlessly as usual. Seymour had some sort of trouble with his car on our run, not sure what it was yet. He has a lot more info on the race when he gets back in. Slantzilla ran fast and had no problems that I know of. It was good to finally meet Dennis after 10 years of seeing each other on the boards.

I was pleased that running the timing with the Megasquirt along with correcting the slipped balancer took nearly a second off the Duster. I'm still not thrilled with the TBI but once I get it warmed up it's fine. At one time I was changing the plugs and I looked up and saw I had Mike J, Mike E, Dennis, and Lou all supervising the operation. All I needed was Doug Dutra there to sign off the work! Talk about high-powered slant talent watching the amateur!! ;) No, that won't make me nervous, no not at all! It was all good fun and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks! :D

I'll wait for Lou's write-up to include in SSRN.

Sorry I couldn't make it. Maybe next year.

I'm trying to plan a trip to Tucson. Need anything? Some REAL enchilada sauce, etc...

Ha ha.. can you believe it. Really good mexican food here. (More to follow on that...)

I wrote some more above. Oh, my wife was so proud of me she let me order one bucket seat for the Duster. I need two, so I guess I have to race some more.

I also had a great time even though the new converter was not correct. Great bunch of guys to hang around with and I also learned a few things about EFI. Weather was 100* when we left...I thought the race in June was suppose to prevent this 8)

Yep, great times in Kearney. Neal and I had a wonderful time hanging with everyone, running the new setup, and competing. We made back to his house in Minneapolis at 2 AM this morning, and had a stupendous and relaxed Mexican meal in Carroll, IA on the way. I just got back to Blacksburg after my 6:20 AM flight from MSP...

The Dart was a champ all the way. Lower 14s or 13s are on the way with some little tweaks and good air. Got 21-22 MPG on the way back and we did a lotta fun passing and blasts on US 30. My supposed 6psi wastegate spring turned out to give 8.5-9 psi max, but the tuneup was rich-ish and 17 deg total timing, so we were fine with no intercooler or meth inj.

Big thanks to Mike for hosting the race, and handing out $20 to everyone about every hour or two throughout the event. What a guy. Big thanks also to George and Jaylene Harris for hosting us late Friday night. Sorry, I did not get a chance to give you a ride, George - oops!!

MAN, it was HOT on the way back. Saw several bank thermometers over 100F...

Dennis re-set the D/gas record at a blistering 14.19 @ 96 MPH (sorry Ryan Covalt). I set the D/Unlimited record at 14.98 @ 95.3 MPH, which I (or someone else) will lower soon I'm sure. My 60 fts sucked as I suspected, and I couldn't raise boost much on the line due to traction issues.

We were discussing Midwest race location for next year, and several were propsed to give a nice change of scenery.

Grove Creek, MN
Oahe, SD
Cedar Falls, IA
Others??

Seymour requested that he do the writeup for this race, to which I replied "Be my guest!"

Slant on,

Lou

Got home this morning at 5am. Drove straight through after having dinner with Mike and Mike.Mike Evans and I ran together back to Des Moines. I was going to find a rest area and stop right after we split.

I was about halfway between Des Monies and Iowa City when a semi started to pass me. I looked out and thought, "Man that truck is close".. Then, the guy just kept crowding over in my lane. I put the truck/trailer on the shoulder and he kept coming over. I was far enough over that the trailer went off the edge of the shoulder into the weeds. It's really weird listening to a semi on the rumble strip next to you at 60 mph.

How I got away from him without his trailer tires running over mine and not getting sucked into the ditch had to be divine intervention.

After that the adrenaline was flowing enough to keep me going all the way home.

The race/fellowship was great as usual. It was really cool seeing George and Ryan there with all their family and friends, and finally meeting both of you. :D :D :D

Also as usual, going to a Slant race was an adventure for me. Broke the truck, car, and trailer, and almost got wrecked twice, (I almost got plowed in the pits Sunday by another car) but also as usual, it was the most fun you can have without needing bail money or hospitalization.

Where else you gonna see 2 guys driving cars from Minnesota to race in Nebraska when it's 100* w/no A/C at all?

I do have to ask though, how is it that when in Nebraska no matter what direction you are driving you always have a 20 mph headwind and the sun shining in your driver's window?

Again, a huge "THANK YOU!" to Seymour and Mike for basically funding the payout for 2 races out of their pockets, and Mike for hooking us up with the motel/track. :D :D

Pizza Hut was great Friday night even if it was only 4 of us, and the salad was great too.

I love racing at Kearney, but it won't break my heart if we go to Cedar Falls next year.

You must be livin' right Big D to avoid tanglin' with an eighteen wheeler! Glad you are okay. What an adventure. When you guys get rested up - perhaps some pics?
