i have a 75 swinger with a super six setup and an open 6 to 1 header. i can't get this thing to idle. the only time i got it to idle was after the engine warmed up for a while from trying. then it idled. is the engine not idling because of the lack of back pressure or is there another possible reason? i don't plan to keep the exhaust open but i would like to have the car running properly wen i get the exhaust system next week. thanx in advance.

sounds too lean, it might be less backpressure than stock sup 6 exhaust manifold so it needs a richer mix, how was it before the header? is there any smoke?

for some reason my signature says super six but i am actually rolling a single barrel holley. i am although about a week away from getting a sup 6 setup thanks to another slanter. i have although done this with many other carbs, i am going by basics. get the car warm enogh to idle if you can try 1/2 turn counter clockwise each see if it ups the idle, if it lowers it go the other way. i use 1/2 turn increments some use 1/4. if your car is running good it might be your choke adjustment also, if your car idles good warm than it most likely is. I am sure the more experienced slant tuners have a good formula and some standard settings. the articles section of this forum is loaded with info, check it out

That line under your member name (Super Six, Hyperpak, etc) changes with the number of posts. It's just one of the fun features of this forum, and I like it!
Personally, I still have my BBS in place, although a BBD and its two-barrel manifold are waiting on the shelf.

I couldn't get my slant to even stay running let alone decently idle with open clifford shorty headers. It took a number of starts to get it on the flat bed towtruck that took it to the exhaust shop.

Affirmative.

Without an exhaust, I would have to keep the pedal down or the motor would just die, and it was a pain to get it started. Once the exhaust was on, started on first crank with no pedal at all.

If you didn't connect the choke up correctly, you'd have a heck of a time getting it to idle cold, but it would run perfect when warmed up.

Is the choke flap closed when cold starting?

funny you mentioned that i installed a manual choke because theres was nowhere, to my knowledge, to bolt the automatic choke because of the header.
