Everybody's been very helpful with suggestions as to why I've had a poor idle lately, and I think I've got it nailed down.

After checking timing and all my plugs, hosese, etc, I was using WD40 to check for vacuum leaks. Nothing on the outside of the carb or around hoses, however, if I spray down the throat of the carb, and spray a lot, then the idle picks up and smooths out.

So I'm thinking it's a fuel supply situation. Fule filter is new and at the side of the engine to avoid vapor-lock. It fills right up w/ gas.

So it's probably float setting, right?

Any ideas of what else it could be?

Thanks,

Joe

Could be a low float setting, but that's not very likely; a low float setting tends to show itself at high engine speeds (engine starves and surges when floored in 2nd gear at highway speed, for instance). It sounds like you are running lean at idle -- are you sure you checked the throttle shaft for excessive wobble in its bushing area? This is a common wear point; check it by spraying carburetor cleaner (get rid of the WD40) at both ends of the shaft where it enters the carburetor with the engine idling. Check that the idle mixture is set correctly and accurately. Check the idle atomizer tubes for obstruction; this is another common issue with the BBD.
