Seems everything slant relate is going up on e-bay, I was trying to get a 4 speed bell housing off there, one guy has opening bid of $50 buy it now 75 just for the housing and fork, no cover plate or anything else. I gave up on an auction that ended yesterday when someone came last minute and ran it up to $65, I had been sitting on it for 5 days at $25. Guess I just need to take the time and hit the yards to get one cheap once the water dries up around here in STL maybe even find a few to e-bay myself so I can afford to get the 4 speed transmission.

good thinking, but it seems that some people have the desire to pay too much for something so they over bid. i guess as long as you win thats all that counts, right?

That's how the morons with more money than brains that hang out at the eBay site overbidding everthing view it, I guess...

I know I have been guilty of paying too much for stuff that I "really need" in the past on Ebay (Mostly chrome trim pieces) but things now are just getting out of hand. There was a question a few weeks ago about rebuilding a slant 6 vs dropping in an v 8 and the number of new /6 enthusiasts.

I wonder if the really enthusiastic /6 people on ebay driving up the prices are driving potentially new /6'ers away. If newcomers compare prices of the /6 stuff with the v 8 stuff, it makes the v 8 parts seem cheaper. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hey Bohmer I just moved dto St Louis, maybe I'll see you picking over the yards when the weather stays above freezing :)

ebay it's like gambling, most ebayers are buying either good stuff at the lowest price you can find or buying crap at top dollar... i guess that people turns into winning bids junkies....

What really gets me, are the people who pay more for a used item, then the price of the part new, which is still available. (aluminum valve cover).

I have bought quite a few items, and only been stung once, for $9.00, but your always taking a chance. So it needs to be a good bargin. I will deciede what an item is worth, to me, then put in my max bid. Thats it, if I get it good, if I get out bid, no problem. But know what the item is worth, before bidding, and don't forget about shipping.

Me too.

I wanted an old "pie tin" (you know - the one that goes on top of the air cleaner on a lot of the 4 bbl V8's) to straighten up and strip down to make up my own custom deal for one of my Newport projects. Just an old one, just needed a fairly decent tin I could work the dings out of and redecorate, didn't matter what it looked like, right? A $5 or $10 item, right? Imbeciles at eBay were routinely giving $25 to $35 for old dinged up, paint flaking used ones when brand new reproductions are available for as low as $34 each + ship (RIGHT THERE ON EBAY, IN VARIOUS EBAY STORES!). I don't think originality was a factor, either, because I bet most of the used ones were used reproductions. After trying to bid on about half a dozen of them, I finally gave up. A couple days later a guy that I ran into gave me one.

They used to say a sucker is born every day. At eBay, a blathering idiot is born every moment. The sellers there don't even have to do anything to sucker anybody. The morons just step right up and throw themselves on the heap.

I've only been burned once by a seller myself - for $14. But like they say, caveat emptor, buyer beware.

most of the time, when I want something and ntice that seller has an ebay store, i check on his store and you can buy the item you want @ reasonable price, sometimes the buy it now price at the store is the same as opening bid in ebay listing...

I was after a rallye woodrim steering wheel and all I saw at ebay was STARTING at 150 up, and raised up to 500 (?) I ended up getting it for free also, as Dennis did. Just have to refinish the wood (wich I was planning to do either way).

I cannot believe that people falls after such crappy claims as "last of its kind around the country" or "you won't find this anywhere else"...

Another purchase that was cool for me was a mopar performance rebranded MSD 6AL unit. The MSD unit was priced $170 at some parts store I quoted around rochester, NY (have a buddy up there) and I ended up paying $120 shipping included. I just performed a search (using mopar ignition as key words) and plenty of that units came up. I bidded for 2 weeks till all the flaming morons stopped to pay 200 for them. :)

When you come to think about it, it feels like a lot of ford and shivvy users are getting mopar cars (or parts? ) due to the average ebayer behavior :)

You can be savvy about buying on ebay. I dont want to give away all my "trade secrets" but I often end bidding during public holidays, like thanksgiving and christmas when most people are busy doing other things. Searching is the key, finding items that are listed in the incorrect category often gives a much better final price as well.
I know people dont like "snipers" but there are plenty of good software packages for bidding that dont contain spyware etc.
