Hi All.

I had my steering geerbox rebuilt and was wondering if it has to be primed before starting the car, or will the pump auto prime it? I would really like NOT to fry its guts out.. I've never done this before.
Also wondering what fluid to use. my friend says to just use tranny fluid, but if thats the case, why do they make power steering fluid. :?
Thanks

PS fluid is recomended; trans fluid will work.

Just hook it up, start engine, turn from lock to lock several times and keep the reservoir full. You will most likely have to center the valve body(which is where the hoses hook up on top of the unit) as well to keep the steering wheel from constantly steering itself one way.

Thanks again Dennis. The fluid foamed a bit in the beginning and the box was noisy, but after about a minute, it quieted down and was working smooth... that is until the high pressure hose split, lol... guess i'll be getting a new one, and a return hose when the snow stops..

I also had some problems with the instrument cluster. Its been out a while and when i put it back in i couldnt get main plug thats up top to plug back in so i just electical taped it.. Has anyone ever cut all the harnesses and made the wires longer so you can plug everything in before putting the cluster back? I've read that people just slide there hands back there and plug everything in, but it seemed nearly impossible. i think that dropping the column eveytime you need to get it out is a real pain in the neck so I figure i could cut the wires, use an electricians sticker sheet to label them and just make a chart of what wire is for what. ex. #1 = green wire to round pin plug in for left illumination bulb, ect. . I don't want to go through all this b.s. every time a light bulb goes out.   :?: The speedo is the easiest to reach so i'm not worried about that.

Thanks,
Jay

I know what you mean... Digging around under the dash is my second-least favorite thing. I'm sure you could do as you say, if you're careful and make good, secure connections. Those people who "just slide their hands in there" must have hands like ET  . My hands alwez look like I've run them through a meat grinder after I get done digging under the dash. I've found that old B-bodies ('62-'65) are much more "user friendly" in the underdash area than a damn Duster (GGGrrrrrr, aggravates me even thinking about it! ). Most of the dash bulbs are easy to get to on those.
