When I got my slant the distrib was one tooth off and the best timing you could get was about 14-20 degrees BTDC. This caused ignition knock and when I finally got round to setting the thing right (About 6 degrees BTDC on my '76?), I noticed another problem has seemed to be resolved.

It used to be that on cold startup the engine would make a brief but loud and disturbing "knocka-knocka-knock" sound that would go away almost immediately. I assumed from all I have been told that I just had tired bearings (which I still probably do), but I haven't heard that sound since the timing was rolled back. Is it possible that the wrong timing was the cause of my startup knock?

...oil pressure coming up slowly PLUS all that initial timing banged on the rod and main bearings with the high cylinder pressure.
