is it an English Rootes straight six from the humber hawk? I found a humber hawk here in hte UK and in the boot (trunk) there is a hemi head, and in the front under hte bonnet (hood) there is an upright six, looks smaller than a 225, I would guess 2.5 to 3.2 liters based on bore size. the head was definately hemi though and had goofy pushrod arrangement to make it all happen. I know that rootes and crysler had somewhat of an association, with chrysler eventually buying rootes, and making cars in europe that looked a lot like us cars (the rapier which looked a lot like the barracuda)

So, is this the link, the orrigin of the hemi six? thanks

The Ozzy Hemi six has the manifolds on the same side and the "hemi" chamber has the valves canted "front to back".
It is not a true cross flow head, more like a mix of a hemi combustion chamber and a wedge design.

No, the Hemi-6 (D-engine) was a clean-sheet design initiated by Chrysler Corp. in the USA, then given over to Chrysler Australia. There was no Rootes (or other UK or European) involvemet or parts sharing.

this has single side ports. iill take a photo. is it possible rootes took it for the hawk or are they completely different engines?

Shipping would be the main thing, but I know of a number of people who've imported Hemi-6s to North America. Conversion mounts are available for pretty much any '63-up A-body.

You can get a decent hemi six for about $300 aus or so. Will be a healthy running engine. I recently sold a complete valiant with a good 265/ 4 speed/ dual exhaust for $1200 aus.
You want a 265 though if you are going to import one. Larger valves and generally the best of the hemi sixes.
Get a late model one, and you'll get a dual outlet exhaust manifold. You can buy all the usual gear for em, like 4 barrel manifolds, but extractors may be an issue in LHD cars.......
If you go to moparmarket.com and shoot Ozhemi a message, he should be able to point you towards a hemi six in the US. He exports stuff to Aus, and also does some importing the other way.

No, the Australian six was a hemi in name only. It came in 215, 235 and 245 cid sizes, with wedge heads and the spark plugs on the side of the head.

Rootes was a British firm and purchase nothing from Chrysler Australia. The engine used in the Super Snipe (the Hawk had a 4) was an ohv hemi with two rocker shafts. The engine was introduced for 1958 having a 3.25" bore and stroke giving 162-cid (2.7-litres) and 105-bhp. In 1959 it was bored out to 3.44" resulting in 181-cid (3.0-litres) with 121-bhp. The engine was last used in 1967 having 129-bhp.

And it was actually not a Rootes engine, but was designed and built by Armstrong-Siddeley. A-S stopped building cars in 1960, after facing a decade of falling sales. Rootes needed a new 6-cylinder engine for the redesigned Super Snipe for 1958 and A-S had extra engine manufacturing capacity. And the extra work helped keep the firm solvent.

Another bonus of A-S falling sales was extra manufacturing capacity. And Rootes took advantage of this by having A-S built the Sunbeam Alpine. Rootes shifted Alpine production to its Ryton plant in the spring of 1962.

Slight correction - our Hemi came in 215, 245, and 265 flavours.
