I have a problem with my '69 Dart 225 /6. I can't get the timing to go beyond 2deg btdc. Everything is stock with the exception of a recent super setup with a bbd carb. I used both adjustments on the distributor. I tried advancing the distributor a tooth but that put the timing way too far advanced. I pulled the dist today and checked visually, all looks ok. The vac advance seems to work ok. It moves when vacuum is applied and I can see advance when I rev the engine above idle. I installed new points and condenser and gapped points to .020. Reinstalled and still have the same thing. Eventually I want to do the HEI swap but need to get the thing working right now with points. The engine runs good but I have a hesitation just off idle and I wanted to try more advance to clear it up. Any ideas?

Off-timing reads can be caused by dampner untrue marking due to spin. Remove your valvle cover and align your mark with the "zero" mark on the timing tab. At TDC you gotta have #6 cyl intake rocker depressed, and you have to be able to turn the pushrods by hand on cyl #1. If not, the damper mark is not right (or your timing chain is awful bad)

Try to advance the dist 1 tooth. It may take a few stabs till you got right 1 tooth and not 2 advanced... if you advance 1 tooth it should allow you to find acceptable dialing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought about the damper being off but it doesn't ping or kick back like it is advanced farther than it indicates. This motor has about 65,000 miles so I didn't even think about chain stretch. I'll try moving the distributor one tooth again. Maybe I did get two teeth both times I tried it before.
