It runs and starts right up but has developed a metal clanging sound that bangs at higher idle speeds cap, rotor, spark plugs and timming are all in check. Checked oil dipstick (plenty of oil) once in awhile tiny silver metal specks appear what may have worn out? Can't afford to redo or to loose this one if it is knocking on heaven's door tell me please. As this is my only transportation in an old Dodge. tjfarrand@hotmail.com Colville, WA

You don't say if the noise is coming for the top of the motor or underneath. There are a number of things that can cause that kind of noise but the fact that you're seeing metal shavings in the oil is very alarming, if for no other reason than they can cause rapid wear of bearing surfaces such as the rods, mains, and valve train. You need to get it figured out pronto or you'll be afoot.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Does the sound go away when you are driving? I had a slight knocking sound that would appear when the engine was under load, it turned out to be piston slap. When I took the engine apart it appeared that the rings had shattered on piston six allowing the piston to move around in the bore slightly while the engine was running, making a knocking sound as the rpms rose.
