Does anyone know if there are any after market gas gauges that work in an early A body?

Bing do you know what the source of the problem is on yours? What have you checked already?

I don't know of a drop in replacement, but maybe laysons has it.

I've spent many hours mulling over this very issue. SHort of designing an complete new panel and going to all aftermarket gauges I don't think there's an esthetically acceptable way to do it. You could certainly mount a separate gauge in a "pod" and mke it work. The gauge you need should responf to a 73 (or maybe 78?) ohm empty, 10 ohm full sender. That is the system used by Mopars and most Fords and all the instrument makers have them.

Before replacing the gauge, you may want to verify that the gauge itself is bad (if you haven't already). The wire leading from the sender to the gauge on my girl's Dart is damaged somewhere and likes to frequently cause the gauge to show an empty tank. It's gotten to where the gauge no longer shows fuel at all, no matter what she does, so if we get a chance soon I'm going to help her route an entirely new 16AWG wire back there in hopes of fixing the problem.

The sending unit HAS to be grounded. It is kinda strange but the bare steel gas tank doesn't ground to the body good enough for the gauge to work properly.

Time to make a ground wire! :P

Well I´m also interested in a aftermarket fuel gauge, no matter how many hours I spend checking, re-wiring, paying to get the f**** gauge to work and buying new sender units, my efforts get me to the same point, bad readings.
I can fill the tank, drive 10 meters, shut down the car, restart and the gauge marks 3/4 and everytime I start the car the gauge reads lower until it reach 1/4.

I truly think that fuel gauge is garbage now.

Well the gaue is now 40 years old, it was built as cheaply as possible, and you are complaining about problems. You are lucky it even works...
