AFter reading a bit on line, it seems the Hall effects signal is similar to a mag pickup, but that the mag pickup is used to control an existing 12 volt source routed to the distributor, hence the need for three wires. The PerTronix electronic ignition conversion is a Hall effects unit, according to my reading. I am still taking my car to a shop tomorrow to have a scope put on it, but this question is relevant to any options I might have to consider when I get a report back from Fred.

Has anyone here used the PerTronix conversion unit on your slant? Is this the unit that is self contained, and goes inside the bowl? They have been advertizing them for years. What do you know about them? If the Mopar distributor simply does not put out enough signal, according to Fred's scope, then I will have to go with another option. This might be one. Anybody know of another Hall effects distributor that can made to fit the slant? Can a small block v-8 distributor be cut down and fitted with a slant gear? There are many after market choices for the v-8.
Thanks for tagging along on this. You can be sure it will be an issue until this little lady is up and running again.
Sam

been using the pertronix for at least 3 years-- just thought it was a simple economical way to get rid of the points & much simpler than converting to electronic ignition from ma mopar.

I've always been curious about swapping the guts for a mod on a 5.2L distributor with the hall effect rotor to a slant housing and shaft...
R.Ehrenberg did the Rance EFI conversion on the Green Brick and they just swapped in the magnum engine distributor and phased it for their build up to get the signal you're after...sorry I don't remember the date of the article it has pics.

Wouldnt you still need the 6 cyl. dizzy (because of the reluctor, 8 lugs on the V8), which then the 3.9 should do it. But that should be possible even if you have to do some housing machining to get it to go into the /6 block (or machine a spacer) and then of course cut the shaft to lenth & size for the /6 gear.

Look into the 4.0 jeep dizzy, it may come close. I have a 4.0 Jeep dizzy if you would like some measurments off of it to see if it would work. I dont have a /6 block handy or I could check it for you.

D.I. and Jess, this sounds intriguing. Does the modern Magnum engine use a hall effects distributor? I will look into the 4.0 jeep thing too. I just assumed both were some sort of distributorless ignition.
Maybe I should pick up a cheap DYI book on thhe late model pickup trucks.
Fred at Total Performance, where my car is going tomorrow may have a solution in mind as well. He may have available to him through one of his suppliers, a hall effect distributor that can be modified to go into the /six.
I am not certain, but I suspect the /6 reluctor and cap will fit a v-8 bowel. In which case, any distributor made for the v-8 might be modifiable to fit the slant. A have been waiting for Rance to reply about the dual sync distributor which is made for the Accel gEn Vii set up, but he is slow to reply. This is compounded by the fact that his e-mail does not work sometimes, and I am left wondering if he has not gotten my mail, or if he is just avoiding me.

As the pertronix is self-contained, it would look like a set of points if used as a triggering device for something else.

The 1992-mid 90's magnum engine does...I just found my copy...Mopar Action April 2002 "DFI Dynamite", they used a crank trigger setup on the small block...

Good luck on your search!

Exactly. I've got one on my Dart, for the time being - I plan on replacing it with a Lean Burn distributor. The Pertronix fits points distributors and bolts in. As it is both a Hall Effect sensor and an ignition module, its trigger setting goes between floating (or possibly 12v) and ground. It's about the same sort of output you would get if you connected a GM HEI module to your stock pickup.

I bought a pickup coil for my /6 and the grommet on the wire was in the wrong place. I put it in and ran it anyway. I rechecked the part number and it turned out to be a v-8 pickup. It came with the mounting plates so the v-8 distributor must be very similar.
