I finally got the horn to work on my 64 Valiant, and now it works too often. When I turn the steering wheel, the horn blows. Any ideas?

All I can suggest are the basics; look for a broken piece floating around inside the wheel near the copper disk or a broken mount inside the horn switch. It'll probably be obvious when you find it.

Thanks. I pulled the wheel, (for the tenth time) and noticed that the insulation under and around the contact ring was crumbling. I pried off that big spring clip, which went airborne, but I found it. Then I re-insulated the ring using some fiber gasket material and some silicone from a tube. The hardest thing was getting the spring clip back on, but when I reassembled everything, it worked perfectly.

Well, if it's like my '64...disconnect the Neg battery cable for safety and to keep the horn from blowing while you're working on it. The center button (with the triangle emblem) has a little notch. You put a flat blade screwdriver in the notch, and gently pry it up. Once it's up a little, you can work the blade all around very gently, and it will pop out. Under that is a little foam pad. Take that out. That reveals the three screws that hold the big horn push 1/2 ring (the thing you push when you blow the horn). Remove the wire from the horn switch. Remove those 3 screws and spacers and you'll be holding the big 1/2 ring and the spring loaded circular horn switch .
If you don't see your problem there, the next thing is to pull the steering wheel. You remove the nut from the steering shaft and using a wheel puller, remove the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel over, and you can see the contact ring that makes continuous contact with the spring loaded contact as the wheel turns. That's where I was missing some insulation, so the horn would blow when the wheel was turned. Hope that answers your question.

That was easy.........

Never noticed the notch before, so was afraid of cracking 40+year old plastic................

BTW, horn worked fine, but was on crooked......

Thanks

Beautiful. Glad that worked out and your button is straight.
