I have to begin by saying I hate the way Holley put these metering blocks together so that all the check balls are captive. The ball inside the end of the metering block for the economizer has fallen into the spring that holds it on it's pressed in seat. I would have no problem removing the seat to get at the ball and spring, but of course there isn't a new spring or seat in the kit.



As you can see in the picture the economiser ball has fallen into the spring. The ball is in there, but it's inside the spring instead of on it's seat.

The car would run this way, but it's going to suck down way more gas than it should at best. And it will foul plugs, dilute the oil and all the other bad things that come from an excessively rich cruise mixture at worst.

If I can't get this fixed I'll be in the market for a good metering block or maybe one of Dan's Economaster carbs if he has one left to fit this '67 Valiant.

Oohboy...been there, except in my case the seat fell out of the metering block altogether, leaving the spring and ball on the floor of the carb. I'd guess you can reüse the existing spring by turning it end-for-end, and the check ball itself should still be good, that is assuming the seat isn't corroded or misshapen (and doesn't get deformed in the course of your prising it out and tapping/staking it back in!)

Ok, I decided what have I got to loose? Let's open this sucker up all the way. I got the pin out of the lever so I could get to the seat. The seat didn't look like brass, but once I found that it was I threaded a little screw into the seat and yanked it out. As you can see in my fuzzy little picture the spring is smaller on one end! The spring has been backwards since it was built in 1967! Maybe this carb problem and the resulting $#!+ gas mileage is why the car only has 42k miles? Anyway, now I can put the carb back together and see if I've fixed the original problem of the car not idling once the choke opens.

Hey Josh,

How did things turn out? If your fix proves right it may mean I have a couple of Holley 1920's I'll have to 'flip a spring on' in my garage...

The car still runs like @ss. I think it's the old gas in the tank. I need to try fresh fuel and a full ignition tune-up before I know the full story. I've never driven this car either so I won't have before and after impressions or data just a subjective opinion of how it runs. In any case the carb was assembled wrong so it should get better economy than it ever did before.
