I want to to totally get rid of the ESA system in my '85 van. I can get the conversion parts, but the MP instrutions only tell you how to bypass the ignition function of the ESA. I want it GONE totally.

Has anyone done this?

I changed over on my '84 D100.
There are a lot of wires that need to be removed. It took me awhile to sort thru what was not needed. Most went except for one the bolts to the top rear of the head, it has a large eye wire end on it.
To get rid of the unsightly air cleaner, I am using an unsilenced one off a '67 273-2bbl.
To rewire, I did this;

Well...I figured since all my vacuum lines and wiring is in good shape, I ordered a new ESA unit.

Ouch... I can't imagine that was cheap. New or remanufactured?

Not too expensive. About $245 from Rock Auto. BUT I get a $115 core refund when I send the old one back. :D

Reman unit from Cardone.

OOPS, I hope it works ok. I stopped using Cardone ECM's a few years ago, because of getting many bad ones. When I called the company to talk to them about it, they gave me a bunch of grief.

Keep the old unit, until you are sure the replacement unit is good. Use the replacement ECM for at least a week, before returning the core.

My choices were KEM, Standard, and Cardone. I figured since Cardone makes good reman. water pumps and distributors, I'd go with their ECM. Thanks for the advice.

The Cardone unit is warranted for 1 year so that's good at least.

What happened is somehow the vacuum transducer on the ESA unit busted loose from the main body. The engine still ran, but I don't think the ESA was providing the correct timing curve. I was also getting an intermittent "wooooooooooo" noise from under the dog box. I thought it was the diverter valve on the air pump. No dice...it was the vacuum transducer making the noise.

I replaced the ESA with the Cardone unit...so far so good. No more odd noises from the transducer.

Well two weeks ago I took the van down to my buddy's garage to do some work on the old girl and when I was finished, she wouldn't start. Thought I flooded it. Nope...I wasn't getting spark. I thought, "Dammit, I bet it's that reman. computer." Luckily the factory manual has a diagnostic tree. After about 15 minutes and a voltmeter, it turned out my coil took a crap. I had no symptoms...it just quit. $15 later and I was back on the road! :P
